and Antarctica isn't arid ?

This is vaguely penguin related so not too much of a derail I hope...!

I know it's the driest place on earth, but I thought that to be considered arid a place had to be inhospitable to both plants and animals? Have I been living a lie?!

It is inhospitable. Only the Emperors can live there year round and I believe all inhabitants have to source their food from the sea as there's nothing to eat on the land itself.

How time flies. A year ago in this thread:

Not xmas yet.Back of Vernon's house at the moment is the most amazing firework display,brilliant.

We stopped buying fireworks years ago. We couldn't compete with the ones over the back. We have a ringside seat to one of the best free non-municipal firework displays in the country.

Cheap seats available for tonight's display available at @postman's house. The ringside seats are sold out.

Urgh. Makes me glad I don't have a TV. One of my main objections to Christmas is the money-grabbing, profiteering aspect of it. I think of all the families who are facing a Christmas fed by foodbanks and the fact that 90,000 children in the UK alone are going into this winter without a permanent home and it puts a different spin on how much we spend on tat for just one day of the year.

Dont forget the many many parents, who will take out loans, many with very dodgy lenders, to give the kids a christmas.

The same parents who, a few months later will face crippling repayments.

@AndyRM

We've released the single of Tom Odell singing the ad theme tune, and a good chunk of the profits from that is being donated to the WWF. In addition, on the JL 'Monty' webpage, we have a link through to the WWF where people can adopt a penguin.*

*Others animals are available! ;o)

One of my dog grooming client's did just this. She got a 'logbook loan' at 423% to get her new, and only Grandchild, presents for her second christmas. Child was 1. The loan was for 1000, I saw her for one more groom then never again. Her neighbours told me that she actually sold her dog for a couple of hundred quid to make a payment with all the interest added on. This was just a few years back but before Wonga et al burst upon the scene.

Why would you spend that sort if money on a two year old even if you had it. At that stage they are just out growing the live the wrapping paper, and they would be happy with something from a charity shop?

Actually mine are all teens and I wouldn't spend that much on them now! My eldest is asking for a watch this year.
