It's a bit of a fiddle getting clipped into SPD's for the first time......

Set the release tension to it's lowest setting......and just practice. I spent half an hour on the bike leaning against my office wall just clipping and unclipping before setting off on the road. I lasted for about 300 yards before ending up horizontal with the bike firmly attached to both feet. No harm done.

Cheers Slowmotion, as if I'm not already thinking about that....

Like others have said set the tension to the lowest setting and just keep clipping in and out in and out. If you have a turbo trainer it will make things so much easier.

Within a couple of rides it will become second nature and as long as you read the roads and account for any idiot drivers pulling out on you everything will be fine.

Oh and remember when you do have one of those clipless moments try to fall to the kerb side as opposed to into the road plus it's only a slow fall so shouldn't hurt as much.

You'd think so wouldn't you. I still have a scar from the cut knee. My only clipless moment was due to a loose/missing cleat bolt, couldn't get my foot out

A few other things when you are learning....

1)....unclip both feet before you come to a halt. It gives you extra options if something goes wrong.

2)..... once you have unclipped, but are still moving, put your unclipped foot or feet well forward on the pedals so you can't clip back in accidentally.

3)......remember that as you are making a date with the tarmac in slowmotion, the adrenaline will shortly dull the pain.:okay:

Can I also suggest the multi release cleats. A couple of times I have had an unexpected emergency stop and yanked hard on my foot in panic and they have released. Model SH56 rather than SH51.

cheers Mo, i noticed this today in the lbs.
