When I was a kid I didn't care, I suppose up till the age of about 12 or 13. As long as it rolled (bike) or fitted (clothes) it would do.

Then from the ages of maybe 13 to 17 I was bothered, had to be winkle-pickers, etc. (clue to date maybe).

From 18 on, not overly bothered about any of it. Probably saved me tens of thousands over the decades, not to mention the lack of grief.

Now? Well, when you get to be old and gray, you REALLY aren't bothered, and absolutely can NOT understand a thread like this, which seems to have more to do with labels than reality.

Ah well, I expect you'll all get out of your teens soon.

Bullshit snobbery

There are certain brands I wouldn't be seen dead on. This is not to say that there is anything remotely wrong with them but, like Nike, Matalan and Vauxhall, however good an individual product they're just not for me.

In no particular order (and excluding the obvious like Emmelle and Universal);

Dawes
Raleigh (except the 1979 Raleigh Transit. In metalic brown)
Any Claude Butler built after the death of Claude Butler
Cannondale
GT
Marin
Specialized
Saracen
Thorn
Dahon
Merida
Giant
Trek
ICE

What would you not be seen dead on?

Mickle, An excellent post - cat in the pidgeons - wonderful. I love the comments from people, but I think some folk have taken this a little too personally. Criticise my bike, you criticise my self worth. A bike is definitely more than just a Taiwanese made piece of metal/plastic.

Any mountain bike: they're just so naff.

Probably any road bike as well cos they all look the same and the people riding them never look as though they're actually enjoying it.

Tandems - I should imagine they cause the most terrible rows and wreck relationships.

I must admit, I've turned into a bit of a snob. I wouldn't want to be seen on a Halfords Carrera. Some brands seem cool and others don't. Claud Butler doesn't seem very racy. Saracens have never appealed to me. Giant seems too mass market. Mad really as they're mostly made in the same factories with the same bits.

So what do you ride? And is it on Mickle's list?
