Re the whisky/whiskey debate I think cheap whiskey is much much better than cheap whisky, but conversely the more expensive whiskey is disappointing compared to similarly priced whisky

I'd say that's spot on. I've never had an Irish whiskey that compared with a top single malt Scotch, but I've never had one I didn't like - unlike Scotch, where some of the cheap/megabrand (I'm looking at you, Bells) ones are really pretty nasty.
