shimano said:'emo' is short for 'emotional', all the kids into it are supposedly depressed and obsessed with death - bunch of attention seekers if you ask me.

They're a rock band. A noisy, thrilling, theatrical, silly rock band. If you take the lyrics as an absolutely straight statement of intent then you are missing the point.shimano said:just taking one band as an example, have a read of these lyrics by My Chemical Romance and see if you think they're cheery and uplifting or dark and brooding:

But according to the Daily Wail, emo is 'the music that's killing our kids' or some such bloody stupid attitude. There will be some music, and yes, Ian Curtis is a good example, where you can't separate the music (well, the lyrics) from the reality. But that doesn't apply to MCR. If the fans were the doom laden, suicidal, self-harming misery-freaks as the papers makes them out to be, would they have staged such a polite and well mannered protest outside the Hate mail's offices?alecstilleyedye said:unless you are listening to the aforementioned joy division album…

Goth as rebellion was a complete failure chez Baggy - much to my disgust my Mum took it all in her stride, even when I shaved the sides of my head and dyed my hair blue - but then as I have much older brothers who'd been into punk and heavy metal she'd already been through far worseKirstie said:Seriously I have no idea where it is...my mum probably buried it somewhere as she had SUCH a problem with my goth-ness...(doesn't everyone's mum)
