a bit off topic but the neighbout of my friend had the one millionth mini ever build

It had a special plaque on the dashboard

it was parked in their drive
when we were teenagers we used to play cricket in his drive - right next to the driveway with the mini init
it just say there - never used - gradually rusting away
the last time I saw it it was just rusted to hell and back

weird - if they had kept it nice or sold it they could have got good money for it

I mean - if they still had it now and it was in one piece then who knows what they could have got for it

anyway - back on topic

The person who I bought this place off had a very early burgundy Mk1 Austin Mini 850 that he kept in a dilapidated shed. I tried to buy it off him even though it wanted some work to get it on the road, as I was in the market for a Mini at the time. But he refused, and yeah, it sat there gradually rotting away till it was eventually cut up for scrap. So very sad.

A couple of years later, I found a newly-restored Mk 2 Morris that I ended up buying.

Was it? I'm not pat on Fords, so may have picked the wrong one. Bad Reynard.

Must confess a love of old Fords as I grew up surrounded by them. The oldest I ever travelled in was a 1958 Consul with bench seat and column gear change. :becool: The oldest I ever drove is a '66 Corsair with the V4 engine.

My Dad has always had a hatred of BMC/BL products as the lorries he used to drive gave so many problems.

Just doing some Googling. The Mini was launched on August 29, 1959. The 105E Anglia on September 30, 1959, so the Mini did just about beat it to production.

Me too, but before buying a Granada estate new in 1977, my parents previously owned a Citroen DS Pallas and a Renault 16TX, which as a car mad 12 year old in 1977 I thought the Renault and Citroen were far more interesting cars than the Ford, I still have a soft spot for French cars now.

It was Rootes Group here (1962 Hillman Super Minx estate and a 1966 series V Sunbeam Alpine) and Citroen (1971 Dyane 6). I still have my SAOC t-shirt somewhere.

But the Mini always appealed to me, because yeah, well, it's a good car to drive when you're a bit, umm, undertall. And, of course, its competition history.

I've nothing against Ford but I'm ambivalent. My Dad had a Daimler Double Six and then a series of Volvo estates so I have no personal fond memories to get misty eyed over.

My parents Granada didn’t last long, my Mum (who was the driver as my Dad didn’t have a licence until much later) hated it, it was replaced with a Volvo 265 Estate which they ended up owning for 13 years, that was replaced in the early 1990’s with a 960 Estate and then in 2000 with my old BMW 325tds touring, they then had 3 series tourings until my Dad passed away last year.

I can definitely see the appeal of a Mini and I love minimalist design of the very early ones in particular. I'd be awkward though and have a have a van or estate so I could take my bike. Or I've always fancied a Riley Elf. Someone close to my school had one in diamond white and I always admired it.

I'd like an Imp too.

I love the older classics really, even though it's before my time. The styling and details of a MkI Cortina, a Humber Sceptre or Triumph Herald is much more interesting than a Nissan Sunny.

There is only a couple of classics I would buy, a 1970’s Porsche 911, BMW E30 M3 and a Mk 1 Golf GTi.

There's lots I might like but probably very few, if any, I would buy as it ends up costing a lot plus you need storage and I have a mortgage to pay.
