My Dad had a Capri 1.6 Calypso
He got it just as I was starting university so I got to share the driving on the way to Nottingham - or back
and also on some holidays

It was a lovely car to drive - road holding was brilliant as it was a 1.6 but had the wide wheel of the more powerful versions
My Dad loved it and so did I
but

it was a pig to drive around narrow roads and do U-turns in due to the tyre size -and by Dad was a Chiropodist and did a lot of visiting patients on estates - often needing sharp turns and u-turns
the car was 2 door - and the doors were huge
my dad always kept the car in the garage and hence the doors would not open very widely until they hit the wall
as my dad was disabled he needed a decent gap to get out - but more importantly the pillar was a long way back which caused him problem getting leverage to get up as his legs didn;t work too well!

It was a great car but not right for him - but I think he kept it for over 2 years
only traded it in when a family friend got a Honda Accord when they were first in this country and that was probably the best car he ever had!

Back in 1983 I had a very rusty daytona yellow 1973 Capri 3000 GXL which I paid £550 for from Northampton Car Auctions, it was a shockingly bad car, I swapped it 6 months later for a Scirocco GLi which was just so much better. I’ve never felt the love for 1960’s and 70’s Fords they were a triumph of marketing over engineering.
