I expect you've all seen this. Driver tweets about a collision.

The bit I love is the 'friend' reported as saying 'She's a nice lass...ok, she made a silly tweet, but it's been blown out of all proportion', thereby rather missing the point - that her friend's indiscretion was not so much the tweet as the assault with a deadly weapon and leaving the scene without a qualm (quite the opposite), while having no idea whether her victim was alive, dead or seriously injured. Birds of a feather, eh?

Of course we still don't know if that's true but hey it hasn't stopped anyone from oiling their ropes and sharpening their knives. We only have the usual vigilante stuff written in road.cc with accompanying baying comments and a story from the cyclist which has slowly evolved as it's gone on.

Firstly he bounced off the car, through a hedge, back on to the road and finished the sportive, then we learned that actually he'd been bounced into a hedge and been knocked off, consistent to both versions is he wasn't going to report it. Why not, I keep asking myself. Perhaps as he'd taken the mirror off the car, he didn't fancy paying for it. Maybe it was he who didn't stop. Perhaps she did.

Of course we don't know, we only know she made a silly tweet, that the report of what happened keeps changing and that a load of slavering, baying tossers calling themselves cyclists have decided to persecute this girl. egged on by a cycling publication.

Personally I reserve the right to wait and see whilst at the same time being fairly disappointed with the whole story and the way people have reacted.

Of course we don't know

The freelance chef had not intended to report the incident, fearing that his girlfriend would be worried about him cycling in the future

We do know. Stop making stuff up and lying about Toby please.

I think the key is in her wording. Note that she didn't say; "bloody cyclist smashed my mirror and did a runner" or words to that effect.

Whatever the actual facts, the incident seems to be highlighting that there is an attitude among many people that they can do whatever they like in a motor vehicle and that if anything goes wrong it is someone elses fault. This is what needs to be changed in my opinion.

According to her friend she couldn't see the cyclist so drove away. Errr..

Here you go Spindrift, two differing accounts. One points to being knocked off the other doesn't. Could just be bad journalism of course.

BBC report
"But I managed to get out of the hedge and stand up".

Road.cc
"bounced back off the car and went through a hedge for about 20 metres. I managed to keep control of the bike; the back brake had locked on but I managed to rejoin the road and stop in the middle of it"

So , we are agreed he went into the hedge on his bike after being hit by the car driven by the girl who wrote the tweet.... that's driving without due care and attention, leaving the scene of an accident involving another person and possibly dangerous driving depending on witness statements...
