<- that is a base 2013 Sirrus and I adore it. I would imagine the Elite is a delight.

I have the 2013 Elite, fantastic bike

But is the Sirrus elite that much better than the Sirrus? The guy I talked to on the phone from Specialized said there is not much difference apart from the gears.

Have you got somewhere very secure to lock the bike up at work?

I would normally suggest that people buy the best bike they can afford, but since you will be mainly using yours for a short commute, I'd be tempted to save money and buy a cheapish but ok bike. If you really got into cycling you could keep that as your commuter bike and buy a more expensive bike later.

I just checked to see if the Sirrus Elite has fixtures for mudguards and a rack, which it does. I would definitely want those on a commuter bike.

Yes fairly safe outside but in the grounds of work. I am buying a kryponite lock and also getting it insured which is surely what every cyclist should do when it is so cheap. Just over 3 pounds a month to insure a £400 bike.

I consider 400 pounds fairly cheap for a commuter bike. I may one day spend a couple of grand on one if I get into it and start going long distances. Not sure if I am getting the elite, sport or standard sirrus yet but I think they can all be fitted with mudguards and rack can't they?

You said you were considering the elite at £800. I would certainly choose one with a carbon fork for comfort. Specialized used to offer on the sport model up, however in the last few years, the spec has shrunk but the prices not!

Certainly my previous sport and elites took rack and proper sks mudguards

Well I am going to try it but for fairly short distances I may make do with one of the cheaper sirrus's. Gonna try 4 of them out and decide which one is best for me. Of course I expect i'll be tempted to go for that one but need to see if it is really worth paying that much for what I need it for.

If you are going new then go for Ridgeback. Same specs as the big brand boys but lighter and cheaper. Giant also makes great hybrids and they would be my second choice. You want to look at weight first and avoid those big comfort saddles with the springs underneath like the plague, I took one off my dad's bike and it weighed 1.2kg on it's own.

Well I am going to a Specialized store so don't think I will be trying that. lol. Not sure what shops supply them. If Halfords do then they don't let people test ride their bikes so aint getting one from there.

hehe I have a 2010 specialized hardrock . I bought it for £150, which incidentally is how much I spent on my 2009 ridgeback.

I have a feeling, and when I say this I mean I have already been on ebay and checked, that finding out what your ( @MAZI ) bike is worth now might give you a bit of a nasty shock.

A used bike is only worth what a buyer wants to pay  (and what else is on the market at the time). 2012 Elite - £200-300 tops depending on condition, history?
