Most expensive was just under £2000, Thorn Sterling bought for a planned 6 month tour of South Asia last April. My main bike is a Pearson Touche fixie bought 3 years ago for just under £700. Excellent investment, been used for commuting and social rides, totally reliable and payed for itself several times over already as I haven't been running a car since buying it.

The Sterling hasn't left the shed since returning from the tour, prefer riding the Touche. A small tendon tear in my knee still hasn't fully recovered but intending to use the Sterling for some weekend tours when recovered.

About £7k for one of the first Moulton Double Pylons five years ago. But the current price is double that, so mine is now probably worth more than I paid for it!

Bought my Tricross in 2009 for around £850 with some parts added (rack + fenders). Funnily enough, I ride it as little as possible (a few times a year) and instead use my 2006 Allez which I bought for £400 (down from £530) but has upgraded stuff on it now.

My Turner SixPack was just over 4 grand about 4 years ago, so far I've broken it twice. First time I'd ever spent that much on a bike and I'm looking forward to getting it back into working condition again.

Spent 2 grand on a new hardtail this year, a Banshee Paradox to get into racing again. So far a very sweet bike, but I had to stick to a budget so forks and groupset will be due for an upgrade next year.

Next on the list is new road bike for this summer, single speed track frame, with brake and tri bars. Goal is to keep it under a grand.

I don't drink, don't smoke and my car's a pos.

£520 for my 2010 Secteur Sport new, was a bargain. I still do most of my miles on a 2004 Marin Mill Valley hybrid and it is great. I still look at carbon bikes but I honestly think that one would be wasted on somebody of my ability.

Just under £4000 for a hand built customised Hase Lepus. Apparently it is the only one ever made to that spec. The thing had to be completely redesigned so that all the spec could be put together. I got a load of extras for free too!

Just visited the Moulton factory a few days ago - nice to see bikes being handmade still, and top-quality workmanship. Apparently the bulk of them go to Japan! Had a quick test-ride with a friend who's working there, but wasn't allowed to ride the Speed:

Looking back one has to allow for the change in the buying power of money.

My first new bike in 1963 cost £15. Then that was about 4 weeks wages. My last new bike cost £250 and was about 1 weeks wages, and was totally superior to that first bike. Take things by how many weeks work it takes to pay for them and you will find that so much has actually become cheaper as a proportion of income. The bike I am now riding cost £30 on Ebay plus about £60 to make it decent.
