But there's such a difference between "need" and "want"

True. I guess it depends where you start. In a way I've bought my want. I suppose if I had a two wheeled want now, it might be a recumbent but not a more expensive version of what I have now.

I am not really certain how much it cost as it a collection of bits transfered onto it and then upgraded as time wears one.

£500 exactly, but then I upgraded the shifters and bought a load of other stuff for it. I wouldn't like to even guess how much I've spent on it since I bought it.

£1300 but then spent loads tarting it them up. I don't want a full carbon bike either, but wouldn't mind a titanium bike. A Van Nicholas Yukon would be nice. Also if I had the money I would like a traditional steel lugged frame with high-end kit.

A tad under £2000 (Cannondale SuperSix Ultegra 2010), but I console myself with the fact that I saved myself £1000, as it was on special offer.

Actually, it was going to remain a dream bike until I saw the offer, in my frame size. And I thought to myself ... wouldn't it be sad if I got to the end of my cycling days and thought to myself "if only I'd bought that bike when I could, and when I was young and fit enough to enjoy it to the full". One of the best decisions I've made. A dream bike indeed. But I'm actually riding it.

I suppose that to replace my Galaxy with a new one would cost ... er, whatever a Dawes Galaxy costs these days. But I've had it for twenty years (and it was old when I bought it) and rebuilt it more times than I can count, and I'd never swap it for a new one. I don't think it owes me anything, let's put it like that.

I have only ever had two bikes from new. One I got on the bike to work scheme. The other is the most expensive bike I own - it cost £2500. It's the now discontinued Santa Cruz cushtail, and is a totally brilliant bike. I built it up myself with a nice range of components that are still running well after all these years. It's been raced and ridden all over the UK.

The reason I spent the money was because I was treating myself after being hit by a car while cycling. The driver was at fault and I bought the bike from the damages I won when I took him to court. I thought it only fair that for once I didn't compromise! All of my other bikes are nice, but have all been bought as second hand bargains, mostly in bits and pieces, built up over time. They are all nice bikes though and they would cost a lot if they were to be replaced new for old.

£450 for my giant rapid last year and £100 for my ridgeback 604 (new but with scratches when I worked for Madison) about 18 years ago - and its still going strong.

Would love to be able to justify 2kish on a new one bit the truth is, I couldn't......

I'm a member of the Focus 105 club.
Bike was a pony under a grand plus some shiny wheels and new tyres I had which were waiting for a home.
