If he's fatigued then, he would find it very productive to take some rest.

Personally I come back really strong after some rest and can work at 100% rather than mediocre rides that are just wasting your time.Having no fatigue is well worth the slightdrop in fitness.

Riding fatigued is simply putting a false lid on your maximum effort. The false lid or limit you can work at is even less productive than having rest unfortunately.

You are however the exception ;)

I don't think the OP is trying for a maximum effort, I think he is trying to get to work and live his life.

The commute really shouldn't be too much. Cycling is about 1/3 the effort of walking, so your commute is like walking 2 miles to work. While that's a long way for someone out of shape, I don't think you'd expect to be exhausted from that.

But how you feel is how you feel. You've recently had a life-threatening medical condition, you are on immunosuppressants (I assume) so you need to look after yourself. I'd suggest dropping back to just the commutes for a week - rest isn't lying in bed, it's not doing hard exercise - and if after a week you still aren't feeling your best, see your GP. In fact, make an appointment now, you can always cancel it if you feel great.

Roger guys  I've got this mentality if you're doing something youre wanting to become a ninja at it

That said, 100miles a week may well be too much after a transplant/ for the average person. But I'm not that clued up.

If in doubt-leave the ride out ;)

Why would you need rest if you;re doing BASE miles?

As long as I breathe, I attack.
Depends on age , how hard you work, how hard you cycle etc etc so only you can tell what works for you.
Last year i was commuting 10 miles each way and working in an industrial weld shop lifting metal all day then a 50-70 mil on a sunday .
This year i am still commuting but what with the kids i am rarely getting a long ride atm.

Take it easy, thats all. I cant comment on your condition as Ive never had it but it sounds like youve been through the mill.

I have however had recent two spine ops and like you are beating myself up over my inability to do what used to be capable of. Its easy to lose the enjoyment of cycling over something that is probably out of our control. I go out slow, speed up a bit and despite being on the road bike always look over the hedges and enjoy the view and then give it large for the last 10 miles :boxing:... feel crap when I get it and then have a lie down ....
