we touched on this in another thread.

most of the energy in data centres is used on cooling and humidity control on an outdated model from the 50s for paper tapes not HDD or even SSD. some data centres are now breaking away from that and trying to use free cooling where possible and are running the rooms at a slightly higher temp and humidity and are getting good results

scary thought is that Japan data centres alone today consume more power than the WHOLE of Japan could produce 10 years ago. and this trend is continuing in most data centres

I think people who subscribe good money to @pple for the iCloud service would be justified in being a little bit angry. It would not surprise me if a lot of people left the service as a result of this incident.
