Carbon fibre... LMAO!!!
1 1/2.
Surly Bridge Club that I built myself.
Decathlon Rockrider 540 in bits in the shed.

I'd like a road bike for the lightness but can't afford it.
I really can't see the point in numerous bikes. It's not like I can clone myself to ride more than one at a time.

Fair enough, but equally I can only wear one pair of shoes at once and I still have hiking boots, trainers, day-to-day shoes, smart shoes, 'cool' shoes (Converse All-Stars, since you ask) and trail running shoes. And cycling shoes. And yet I can only wear one pair at once.

I think 4 of my bikes were going to be scrapped if I didn't take them. One was found fly tipped and rescued as a challenge. Several others were bought to save them from being bought and stripped down and sold off as parts to make a profit.
I took on several others as they had sentimental connections with their previous owners and I promised that I would restore them and keep them. I bought my Woodrup frame off D C Lane cheap and has had a new stay fitted to it to make it rideable again . It is on hold at the moment.
The modern bikes were bought to see what they rode like. All 3 needed some work on them but it keeps me active. I tend to ride them in wet conditions to save my old steel bikes from deteriorating.
The old classic British steel bikes is out of curiosity and picking fancy lug work. Looking into their history and comparing how each one rides. My Orbit Italia was a surprise. Nobody seemed to want it as it was up for sale for several weeks. The frame material wasn't that fancy being Reynolds 500 but it is a lovely bike to ride and the gearing is spot on. It is one of my favourites. Plus a lot of the old stuff can be swapped from bike to bike which makes things easy if something breaks down.

Only five.

Two Vintage road bikes from early 90's, one hand built for me. Answering @PaulSB - one for racing one for training (at the time)
Vintage Diamond Back MTB from early 90's - again, we used to go MTB'ing as well as road at the time.

Remained as three for some time, then got a fixie for commuting (that went after my accident).

Purchased a Boardman FS in 2016 that's been a great bike, then purchased a 2012 'used' Colnago World Cup CX bike last year which has been the winter/off road/bike packing and climbing bike. The old MTB is used for commuting.

Fair point

I'm fascinated by this thread. I've never owned more than three bikes at any one time. That's basically summer road bike, winter road/gravel and a spare for the odd occasion the other two aren't available. I'm planning to change this a bit to arrive at:

New summer road bike for 2025
Cervelo C3 for dry winter/early spring
Kinesis ATR V3 for wet winter road/gravel

I can get my head round specific bikes such as summer, winter, tourer/audax, gravel, shopper, commuter, MTB, TT.

That's eight. Many of you appear to own multiple bikes with similar purposes. Is it simply the joy of ownership? How do you find time to ride them all?

I do have a friend who owns 84 MTBs. It's like stamp collecting.

According to my swmbo mine is down to me having a mid life crisis 😭

I normally have 3-5 ready and in regular use that get swapped about with others that are ready to ride . With at least 2 set up with guards for wet weather use

Currently ridable:
The Light Blue Robinson V2 Sora (2020) as current main commuter.
Brompton S2L (2015) for travelling.
Enik Makalu (probably early 90s) as experimental singlespeed bike for tinkering and gravely rides.
Surly Preamble (2024) as geared gravel bike.
Genesis Equilibrium (2024) as endurance road bike.
BobJackson Audax End-End (ca. 2008) as bad weather endurance road bike (equipped with fixed mudguards).
Ridley X-Ride (probably 2013) for singlespeed allroad and hobby racing.
Surly 1x1 (2011) as singlespeed MTB.
TotemBikes Custom (2012) as singlespeed cyclocross bike.
BobJackson Olympic Road (ca. 2011) as "sunday bike".
Genesis Volare (2013) as performance road bike.
Edit2: Faggin track bike (ca. 2010) - back then I thought I had the opportunity to ride on a track, but unfortunately it serves "only" on a roller cycletrainer.

Current Projects:
A Genesis Croix de Fer (2024) as the next main commuter (waits for the Microshift Sword Black group set).
Brompton S1L (2016) as base for the "Romped On" racing bike.
Tokyo Fixed (2008) as "sunday singlespeed road bike".
Brother Cycles Allday (2024) as fixed allroad.
Hardo Wagner Randonneur Custom (2010) as singlespeed commuter.
Basso Loto (early or mid 90s) as a neo classic restauration project.
An undefinable Francesco Moser frame and fork (probabl early 80s) as classic restauration project.
Niner e.m.d. (2009) as geared MTB.
Edit1: Ridley Crossbow (2014) as geared cyclocross bike.
