That is a myth... if heat made the glue in shoes come undone how come the shoes in warm regions such as hot deserts and the African continents are not regularly falling apart?
Australia had the highest recorded temperatures on record during 2013 peaking at a whopping 121.3 degrees F (49.6 degrees C) in Moomba in South Australia, even Sydney hit 114.4 degrees F and there were no reports of the glue of shoes coming undone.

Cos it's water temp not air temp?

The poster did not suggest that washing shoes itself was unwise, only that the temperature determined the outcome.
If it is water ingress or detergent eroding the effectiveness of the glue then lowering the temperature would not change this
If it was only the heat that does this then this effects would be the same no matter how the heat was delivered imho

Having heard this stated a number of times on running forums I looked into it extensively and was unable to find any factual evidence, or research that supports washing shoes in temperatures higher tempratures damages the glues used in manufacture, its just not out there.
For as long as I can remember I have washed my shoes on a regular basis. I currently have four sets of cycle shoes which I rotate between washing and letting them dry naturally. I do the same with my running shoes and fashion trainers and have never experienced glue unsticking.

Update: the baking soda worked a treat, boots got wet and sweaty and just smelt like a normal shoe when I took them off today after 42 miles of cycling and 10 hours constantly wearing them...

Excellent. My winter boots are really smelly already. Will give this a go.

I had the same thing with my shoes. I got one of those shoe deodorant aerosol's out of Wilkinsons, I think Kiwi makes it and you just give them a quick blast after every ride/day. At first I thought it was crap and doing nothing but I kept on doing it and after a week or so the smell had gone. I still use it every now and again now.

I'm going to buy another pair of shoes and cleats so that if one pair does get wet at least I have longer to let them totally dry before wearing them.

Last time I had stinking cycling shoes I washed them in the bath with soap and water, and dried them as much as possible immediately after, waited a week before using them again. Smell didn't come back
