How can wearing a helmet offer no protection from injury?

When I rode the Mega Meon earlier this year entry was allowed only if you wore protective head gear ie Helmet
Where do Wiggle stand legally should I have an accident? If the wearing of a helmet were to compound my injury are they not liable?

It would be an interesting case to run and I think there would be a good chance of winning.

BHIT and Headway do!

BHIT also claim helmets cause injuries!

They claim that if compulsory helmets were brought in then one chile would be saved each week from dying through a cycle related head injury.

In the year they made this claim the total number of child deaths was three!

So somehow helmet compulsion would have caused another 49 potentially fatal head injuries!

... or they are simply lying again?

They're not known as BsHIT for no reason.

Now that is an interesting thing.... if helmets do provide protection you would certainly expect to see that show up in the KSI data. You don't. The best epidemiological studies show no correlation between helmet wearing and the probability of death or serious injury. Which rather suggests that helmet use does not offer meaningful protection on the roads.

Even the much quoted Australian stats show the biggest fall in head injuries prior to helmet compulsion. Yet more proof that safer roads are a better alternative than helmets to improving the injury rate in cyclists

Hold on there, they only show a decline in average cycling by around 30%, yet the total hospitalised cyclist injuries did not and the reduction in head injury was marginal. The health benefits of more people cycling outweights the risks of wearing a helmet.

The greatest protection however is a safe cycling infrastructure.

You don't beleive the number because you have never hurt yourself that way?

The XAR offers all the features you’ve come to expect from Giro’s top-level trail-riding helmets—P.O.V.™ adjustable visor; In-mold composition with EPS foam and polycarbonate shell; Roll Cage™ reinforcement—but the XAR heralds a new era of performance, comfort and style. At the heart of this helmet you’ll find 17 Wind Tunnel™ vents as well as optimized internal channeling, and the visor is vented to increase airflow. Breathability on the XAR is incredible; there’s never been a lid this breathable on dirt. Even the padding is extraordinary thanks in part to X-Static fabric.

The evolution of coverage and performance for long-travel trail riding. As trail riding progresses, helmets have to evolve. The Feature starts with a new shape that combines a little more coverage than traditional helmets, with vents that radiate heat up and out of the helmet; perfect for climbing at lower speeds. And when the trail drops, out rugged In-Form fit system offers one-handed fit and stability adjustment, so you can dial-in the perfect feel and stay focused on the trail ahead.

Sales blurb, in full, from two randomly selected helmets from Giro's own website, and in their own words. What is conspicuously absent from these statements?

People who have bothered to look at the relative risks involved in activities before/during forming a belief? I'm sure you will find that concept strange.

First rule of marketing

Sell the Sizzle , not the Sausage!

They don't mention safety for two reasons

The UCI , BHIT, BHSI, BMA do it for them. For free!

They can't back it up.
