XC70 here, purchase price of 1k, I’ve spent that easily on maintenance in the 7 years I’ve owned it and put 55k onto it. E3 163 engine.
We’re now at 225k miles. It’s tired and full of dents but gets the family around in comfort and safety. I’m happy enough.

Wouldn't mind a xc70 tbh.
Good cars! Ideal for rough roads around here!

Aye lad, low mileage is fine if a car has been maintained and stored properly, but it can also bring all sorts of grief if it hasn't.

In and of itself it isn't an automatic sign of good things, yet folk get strangely excited about it.
The 'free Corsa' was serviced no matter what bi-yearly, by a family friend/mechanic who'd worked in the local Jaguar/Toyota/VW dealerships
It even had a new cambelt

My wife's micra is 9 years old, with 30K miles on it.

3 of the four tyres currently on it now need replacing, not because of wear, but from perishing (one is still original from 2015, the other two were fitted in 2018 and 2019, the one fitted in 2021 is still OK).
The (above) Corsa needs a new quartet of tyres too, as they're the original (2012) set, & have 'greyed', they also seem to ride very roughly due to 'hardening'

They’re heavy on suspension parts I believe and on fuel too. If I had to replace with a v70 I wouldn’t complain. Internally they’re almost identical I believe

Talking to the 'next-door-but-one' neighbour this morning, when she came to collect something from the office

Her & hubby bought a VW T5 (LWB) 8-seater/'Combi' (T30 engine) not long after we moved in, they bought it new, on a '05' registration

She told me it's just got to about 128,000miles in 20 years (but it is parked up for a few months per year)

Yes they are x2

We can get 40+ on a long run to our holidays, but only then. Rest? 33-34 mpg (215 bhp 2012). They chew even OE front lower arms for fun.

That will be the ford influence then!!

Nah, I've had pre-Ford Volvos and they did the same. They used the same (or very very similar) part in everything from and S60 upward, so the heavier the car, the fewer the miles before the knocking began. It's front of mind because ours has started mild knockery, so we may get an advisory in a couple of weeks.

Original axles/transmission though
Well, I think the article stated 3rd engine, but with a 4th on standby
It was more of a preventative measure, changing before problems arose, due to constantly working the vehicle

A good friend of mine has one, he loves his when he goes wild camping in Scotland once a year. The rest of the time he'd be better off with an estate car, the running costs he's told me are eye watering. I'll stick so my XC70 "when you getting a real 4x4?" he often asks.

A Paramedic friend has a D4, & has had some big bills for it
When it's going well, he loves it

I keep trying to talk him into a Kodiaq, especially now that 'YAS' (Yorkshire Ambulance Service) are starting to move from Octavia Scouts into Kodiaqs as Fast Response cars, & he'll probably get a go in one
Of course, he really likes it, when I remind him of my 53+MPG averages, that I seen, "What was yours, Mike?"

The fuel bills cripple too for him., the bills while large are too often for me for the advantages it gives for the little time they're required.
A friend has I think the Kodaq(large suv type?) she likes it.
