On the handlebar of my most used bike there are two mounts for lights, I've only needed to use one, although on unlit roads I have turned on the extra light to improve my ability to see when there are no other sources of light around (ie no street lights and no motorists)

A small led light on the head is fine, something to be seen by rather than see by.

What I object to is city commuters who feel the need to wear something more suited to warning shipping, and scatter blinding light everywhere they point their heads. Dazzling other road users isn't clever.

Higher up usually means closer to you.
How many here still ride with their front light mounted on axle mount on the forks? If you stopped using it why?

I once rode with a working set of traffic lights on the back, set on Red, and still people didn't see me. And this was during the day.

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
Stop arguing children. Can I have a pretty blue light, like the ones they have on police cars.

The same road users who complain when they see bikes without lights or ninjas of the night wearing all-black?

Who decides where or what the happy medium is?

You're presenting a false dichotomy there.

The law is clear; it's illegal to dazzle other road users. The CTC has a helpful guide on cycle light requirements, from which this is worth noting:

The suggestion that any lamp on a bicycle might cause undue dazzle or discomfort to other users of the road would have been laughable a few years ago, but not any more. It is not only illegal but doesn't actually improve your safety, should the person driving a heavy motor vehicle towards you be temporarily blinded by your headlamp! So please don't let it do that.

Thank you very much. I am looking at helmets now and can not decide which one to buy.

I didn't question the law. But if you're going to quote it, could you possibly quote the relevant bit?

One could also point lout that even with a full lighthouse on the bike, a significant number of drivers still cannot see you

If drivers are unable to see these lights, are they really too bright

Or they too bright causing the inability to see you.

^This is the happy medium I mentioned above.
