Oh, yes, the VIO can do tagging. Can't be bothered though, I just want clips of the video incident, without re-rendering, hence the use of virtualdub and QTPro for clipping. I don't want to keep 20GB of footage for each commute, but a few tens or hundreds of MB for each incident is fine.

Think you're missing a trick, bud. You can save the clips only, then kill the original footage all on the unit. No re-render required. Each battery change, I tell it to save any tags as 2 minute clips, then kill the original footage (HD eats memory). Come end of week, I move the assorted tag folder to the PC as a 'greatest hits' clips, then format the card.

I don't like Sony stuff much, I've chosen to stick to a proper editor when I actually want to edit video. Adobe Premiere is my choice.

I get on quiet well with it (and its cheap)...BUT...I am frustrated by the rendering capability. No matter how slick and shiny the original footage looks, I seem incapable of rendering an edited film to anywhere near the same standard. It always just looks flat

but, when I use Windows movie maker (on a newer PC) it renders just like the original.

If you are interested, see the difference in these two clips (best in 720).

Pause this at 15 seconds and see how sharp/clear the footage is.

now do the same with this and pause at 36-38 seconds

Frustrating.

I'm sure the correct render is there someplace, I just haven't found it yet.

I think that might be a feature on the newer VIO, not on my older one. I still don't think I'd want to use it like this though. I want to be able to check the before and after of any particular thing I'm interested in YouTubing, and then clip it precisely.

That VIO method strikes me a bit like hammer-mechanic fixing. Ah, I know someone who resembles that remark!

If you want to be able to do that with WMM, then I find actually playing the video through it makes it jump about.
What I do it edit my videos, save them, then review them with playing them through Windows Media Player. If something is wrong, then I can just open it with WMM and change it.

What I am going to have to do with my ContourHD though, is stop and record at set times, so that editing is quicker. ATM it takes about 2.5 hours to prepare itself for a 30 min vid to be edited.

I think I will give VirtualDub a go when I get home.

Just got a Hero 2 HD today. Still charging so no footage yet. :pump: On the specs it looks very comprehensive. Full HD video and a timelapse mode. Bought in London Camera Exchange (Southampton Civic) with 32gb card for £340.

My tip...

Everytime something happens that you want to look at later. Stop recording, and start it again (do this at a time which is safe to do so).
Then when you get back to the computer you can easily view the videos and the last min or so is what you need to focus on.
Do as mikey suggests, and get something like QT Pro to easily clip and re-save the files without needing to re-render them.
Then you only need to import the clip rather than the whole film, this saves huge amounts of time in video processing.

Its a fantastic bit of kit (used by nearly all TV production companies).

Just dont try to use it in the dark, or dusk...or even low light...or perhaps the shade.

I havent had experience of the GoPro in low light (apart from Youtube)but my Contour is better than my old camera. I took it out for a night ride last night and (apart from water getting in the lense which I cleaned out easily) it works very well with car lights and street lamps.
I was trying to do a review, but people on the street kept looking at me funny.

Buy some waterproof tape from Wickes or similar shop then tape around the join between the camera and the rotating lens cover, make sure it is aligned correctly first.

No it's not...its not at all..
Nope...
It cant be.

(did I mention that the hero II was released two days after I bought my hero:cursing: BAST4RDS!)

This probably wont be used at night tbh. The original Hero (640x480 back around 2002) was utter pants. They really have come into their own now.

Check out my comparison video, the Contour Plus V the HD2.

If you compare the start of the Contour footage with the start of the GoPro(about 4m10s in), the GoPro clearly shows the Ninja cyclist which I had a had time seeing with my eyes and the Contour almost misses.
