I wonder how much of that difference is physical differences is the camera & how much of that difference is the response curve that the encoding software is using. If it's more the latter then you just need a bit of software to change the light curve, if it's the former, you're stuck.

My limited understanding is that its both firmware and sensor which are used differently. Still a CMOS sensor iirc just a tiny bit bigger so less noise

I spent £700 on a recorder unit and wired bullet camera in 2009. The unit had the added benefit that I could record off the telly too, in mpeg2 and watch on the puter later. Annoyingly the unit died recently after someone in the house dropped it.
