Stupidly missed a letter I had already found in line three of upper right grid which lead to today's failure in Quordle.

The difficult bit is finding two words which are actually words and which cross appropriately. And you can't just bung in your favourite default words because of the crossing limitation.

Put two words in which span most of the big 10 letters (ETAOIN SHRDLU is my mnemonic - thanks to Douglas Hofstadter), and see where that gets you.

Yes, I got lucky, but there are a handful of common end phonemes, and it's rare to have more than two consonant phonemes in succession, and very rare to have more than one vowel (at least in American English - southern British English is chock full of them...)
While I agree using two words which cover ten commonly used letters is key I'm not sure I follow your point. Finding such words is easy, there are numerous examples, the trick is to decide which to use second as this is dependent on the results from the first attempt.

I think a phoneme is a sound and don't understand why you feel a sound is important. I think you're referring to combinations such as "rd" or "ct" at the end of a word. I don't know what these are called. Are you referring to vowel combinations in the middle of words or the end? In the middle combinations of two are very common in both American and English.
