Slightly off topic, but I remember one financial year end, when the finance team was under pressure to complete the annual accounts within a strict and tight deadline. There was a power failure in the building and all the computers went off, with the exception of the mainframe server, which had an uninterruptible power supply.

After 20 minutes without power, the Finance Director decided that the UPS would run out soon, so just unplugged the server, ignoring the fact that the system should have been shut down using the established routines built for that very purpose. The routines should have been started as soon as the power failed to allow the server to shut down cleanly. But he decided against that….

The result was that, when the power was restored a short while later, it took the IT team two days to rebuild the server from backups and discs. We didn’t let him forget it…..

Point of interest, back in the 80's I worked on a building site in Theale, it was constructing the new (at the time) HQ for the Prudential insurance company, and they had a massive battery back up room that would kick in if the grid went down giving one of the four V16 diesel cummins back up generators time to fire up and settle down, It was quite something when they fired all four generators up for the first time.

The 'legacy' nature of Windows simply expands problems with every 'million lines of code' a potential downward update.
Windows 3.11 was 20 MB storage size whilst Windows 11 takes up 70GB of storage.

Yes, but modern operating systems have to do a lot more. 3.11 would only support the most basic configuration out of the box, e.g 640x480 resolution display, 16 colours display. Basic keyboard. No sound, no printer. Any hardware you installed needed specific drivers supplied separately by the manufacturer on a floppy disk.

Windows now has to support a vast amount of legacy hardware and software, on top of handling all the potential permutations of modern hardware and when they do finally remove support for some ancient printer, people kick off.

Windows has to work with any x86 Intel or AMD cpu (plus ARM-64), with loads of different models over the last 10 (?) years. Your motherboard is by any one of dozens of different manufacturers, same for your graphics card and any other peripherals. So it comes with all the drivers for 99% of computers.

Sloppy programming used to lose you marks 50 years ago.
Cut and paste wasn't invented.
But if you were clever and were using paper tape it was possible to copy "gosub" and insert it into programme tapes.
