I've never used a number on a bike TBH but I'm guessing the way the holes are set high means the top bit will almost wrap around the bars so there's just the lower bit with the number on 'dangling', but on most modern bikes this will then be behind your mass of cables so it must be ok.

I'm going to have a dry run today when I swap my tyres over and have a general fettle

Is anyone driving in on the day from the Salford side

I'm going to cycle there (from Kearsley). The other option would be to join the M60 and head toward the Sheffield turnoff.

it should be fairly nicely flowing.
Here's hoping

Well I expect everyone will race off at the start but me, personally, I'm just going to be taking it easy. I can manage 16.5mph average over 40 miles on fairly hilly terrain, on my own, so I think I can do the same over a flattish 52 miles with a bunch of other guys.

It's not as though there's a brick wall and firing squad for those who don't make it in time

I've just come back from peddling around most of the circuit and on the whole, its quite reasonable with very few 'hills'. The city centre is full of pot holes, raised man holes and re-surfaced sections which is very uneven and dangerous. Heading up to Old Trafford and around that area is a decent stretch of smooth tarmac.

Most of the roads are fine but I would warn people that parts of Ashton Old Road are in pretty poor condition. Shouldn't be a major issue as we'll have the full width of the carriageway, but people riding in tight groups better watch out.

With it being so flat, do we think it will be windy?

Depends upon the day, and you will know about the wind sheer around buildings. The windy bit will be mancunian way as its east west.
