It looks good in the flesh. Because it's a latticework it looks lighter and has movement as you drive past. It works very well.

The heads on top of containers just up the road don't work. From most angles they're just a mess of metal.

Got to say that I like them...

I love that heavy horse. I love the Angel of the North too. Not sure about the mock up of thisnew thing, but will wait and see what actually transpires. I think it would be nice if it looked like it had just walked off the Bayuex tapestry.

You can't beat Uffington though.

Imagine trying to do that now, from scratch and with no other chalk figures to set a historic precedent.....
"These so called artists have vandalised a beautiful hillside."
"What's it supposed to be? Couldn't they get someone who could draw a proper horse?"
"How much did it cost? We could have had a 0.0001% reduction in our tax for that much."
"It's going to distract motorists."
Etc, etc. Repeat variations on a theme until bored rigid. ;)

If we listened to all the moaning sods out there we would have no public art in this country. None. At all.

So the horse is kitsch. So what? Can't public art have a sense of humour or does it all have to be grand and pompous dignified?

So, let's forget the horse stuff, and go for a statue of the Cerne Abbas Giant...

But they only look like that from one angle in one light. Most of the time all you see is three red shipping containers with some scraggy metal on top. The horse always looks good.

see Arch, more of the same problem, stop looking at pictures and go out and get the real thing, you know we only have your best interests at heart

This is Ebbsfleet...

You would need to add a cap, a mobile, a knife and some real tacky Bling to make it more modern...... and I don't think that the local Chavettes need any help with their fertility!

Why a horse? Is Ebbsfleet particularly known for horse-breeding? It may just be visible from France, so perhaps it's to say: "You're not eating this one!". Or perhaps there's a pet food factory at Ebbsfleet.

I had to chuckle when I found that it is right on the doorstep of Kent International Airport, which means that it will have to have navigation lights on it. The mental image of red lights twinkling away at the tips of its ears is quite comical.

Further up the M8 is a giant horn. I only found out about a year ago that it actually plays music all the time! Unless you're standing right next to it you would never know, it's next to a motorway for goodness sake!

I wondered about that one!
I've seen it countless times but never been near enough to actually hear it. Maybe somewhere along the A70 or A71 where people actually cycle may have been a better location.

Indeed. But that shows us everything that is wrong with the design for the horse sculpture. The Uffington white horse (or probably, dragon) has style, grace, even a kind of other-worldliness. It is beautiful and awesome in the real meaning of he word. That lattice-work horse has some of that too.

But this new proposal is just a big ****ing horse. That's all.

It does look a bit like hat happens when a kid has a lot of toy farm animals from different brands, and they aren't to scale.... I had a chicken that was the size of a sheep, but I still played with them together....

Sorry, it's just an ugly heap of rusting metal. Never did like it.

Haway, pet! It has soul. It has the industrial beauty of a ship from the Wallsend yards (the last ones of which are now being demolished) or the bridges over the Tyne. It looks stunning against the blue sky of a summer day or a ice-clear winter. And for most people up here now, it says 'home' as much as those bridges. I think you've been away too long, bonny lass!

Whey no bonnie laad, it's a pile of pretenious rusty shite! The first sign of home for me, when I lived in God's own country, was the vision of Blyth power station chimneys off in the distance. They demolished those a few years ago now.
