Sorry to hear you can't make it. The weather is indeed looking positively mild and dry all night/morning.

I'm not feeling 100%, and I've got a few minor mechanicals, but I'm determined not to miss this one, I've missed too many rides recently!

One of the straps on my Barley is broken, and the GPS has a dodgy battery connection, neither of which will stop me doing the ride, and may be resolvable before this evening. I'm not sure I'm going to be optimal for any TECing, but I'll have to see what I'm feeling like after cycling to HPC (worst case scenario, I turn around and cycle home).

Looking at the Space Weather, the sun is quite active at the moment, with a fair number of sunspots and a damned big coronal hole, so there's definitely a risk of a large CME. The field magnitude looks to be just starting to increase at the moment, the proton density is gong up, and the speed in dropping, all of which is indicative of something coming this way, although it's too early to say how big it'll be. Does that help satisfy the need for a weather update? ^_^

Hmm ... given that we are going to be riding under lots of power lines does that mean we may be in for an amazing light show or sudden agonizing death or similar.

Neither is that likely in the UK, we've got quite a southerly geomagnetic latitude compared to places with similar geographical latitudes to us, hence the Canadians being more prone to their electrical system being hit by geomagnetic events. The power grids around the world have also learnt how to deal with such things better now, and do monitor the space weather reports for this reason.

I wouldn't hold out much hope for any aurora either, that tends to require both a mixture of a big event, and just the right conditions to make it visible in the UK, which is generally very rare when we're this far south. It's slight less rare in the more northerly (and darker) parts of Scotland.

...and if the cloud cover stays broken, we may have some sightings of the international space station at 1.15 and again at 2.49 (the latter pass being a good bright overhead one)
