I don't think you quite understand yet. It's a freewheel OR a cassette with freehub, not both. Yours is a freewheel.

Back in the old days I removed a freewheel. The fact I took it apart to do so is irrelevant.

I used the same technique just last year to replace the chain and freewheel on one of my kids bikes, I just didn't have to rebuild it this time as new bits were waiting to go on in its place. That's middle age affluence for you!

Most freewheels these days are built like a bag of spanners. Cheap replaceable parts. Gone are the days where you could get a Freewheel where you could change all the sprockets as no one stocks these or the sprockets these days due to cassettes being so much easier.

If you have a worn sprocket or two, it's a new freewheel. They don't tend to last long these days as most are cheap crap. They aren't expensive either.

Ed, do they not teach the use of capitals and punctuation in schools ? Makes reading your paragraphs a damn site easier if you use it.

Punctuation saves lives.

Yes, yes they do teach us grammar, punctuation and spelling. Although whilst posting on the internet one simply wishes not to put the effort in to ones English. I do hope you accept this apology.

Just makes life a little easier, to be able to read your posts ! Internet or not, when asking a quaetion, I'd rather not have to work out what you are asking !

Jolly good, keep practicing your grammar young man.

PS Get rid of the pie dish on the rear wheels.

Ignore him! I agree the pie dish isn't sexy or fashionable but it does serve a purpose. If/when the chain goes past the large sprocket and drops into the gap behind the cassette/freewheel it stops the chain from sawing at the spokes if the rider continues pedalling without realising or stops pedalling while the wheel continues to rotate. This can slice through the spokes reducing the wheel to scrap or leaving the rider with a bill for an expensive rebuild.
There will be people that pipe up saying "the chain can't do that if the rear mech is properly adjusted". Well, I'm sorry but they are wrong! The chain can be easily derailed for many reasons, even something as simple and obvious as a stray carrier bag or twig can be enough. For the sake of a few extra grammes and a little ridicule I leave my pie dish on until it breaks. I would replace with new ones but I have looked in the past and failed to find a supplier of replacements of similar quality to the OEM ones.

All I'm going to say on the matter is that whilst ignoring punctuation may make things very slightly quicker for the writer it makes them considerably slower for the reader. As such it doesn't save time at all if both parties have to decipher the message.
This isn't meant to be a dig at all but I think it's worth pointing out.
