No worries, I got five tickets - including two return trips on bits of the Settle Carlisle line with some nice cycling chucked in.

Still some available if not for the S&C.

Try lengthening the journey and as long as the train stops at or you would change at the station your join at its valid. If challenged (you wont be) just say you've taken a break in the journey.

So for example instead of a Wigan to Southport train, try buying a Bolton to Southport or a Manchester to Southport

A pity - as I was planning a 10p trip crewe to manchester ox road which linked well with a £9 fare London to Crewe with London North Western.

I thought this was against regulations and that you'd be strung if trying to leave?

They used to do folk for this who booked tickets from London to beyond gatwick airport and then, devilish fraudsters that they were, tried to get off at Gatwick.
