Exactly the same happened to mine
I had severe shrinkage on a pair of Planet X merino arm warmers the first time I washed them. Having said that, I have a Planet X merino hoody and base layer that have both been washed many times and are fine.
Don't know whether it's any good to you but I'm sure Edinburgh bikes are doing a helmet amnesty deal at the minute.
