Can I come on the ride to Newhaven?
I was thinking of going to France with you but need to be back to help at an Audax control early on Sunday morning. Does anyone have any ideas on how this can be done? All suggestions gratefully received.......

just booked in to Etap at La Villette

they don't allow bikes in rooms, but they do have parking - so I'll be taking a lock or two

If it comes to it we can hire a private parking space and put them all in there. I'm confident we'll work something out.

If it's any help, when I and 14 others stayed at the Dieppe Etap a while ago, they let us put all our bikes in a huge under-stairs storage area inside the hotel. The person who organised the trip negotiated this with the management before we turned up.

I have tried to negotiate with the Paris lot, but without result. Having said that I am married to one of the most spookily effective face-to-face negotiators on the planet.......... (I don't know anybody else who's negotiated down the price of drinks in a pub)

Avoid confrontation whenever possible - if we go one at a time - and start with a Brommie in a bag (I'll be bringing my IKEA Dimpa bag) then if we succeed we can re-circulate bags to get all the Brommies in. Road bikes? Well you'll still be so fresh you won't need a bed that night - on the otherhand if one of us succeeds in geting a ground floor room we can try a through the window job or wait for the night porter (do they bother?). All in all if we can get a result at Agincourt then La Villette should be a pushover.

Er, well actually the WI is supplying tea 'n cakes, i believe, and I am expected to be wandering about with an Auk cap and a pen.

Either tell them to go to a cashpoint or get some random receipt for something, or else give the WI the AUK cap and pen! Surely you're not suggesting that the WI can't run an Audax control...?

Just thinking ahead to this, who is coming to Dieppe nowadays? I think there seems to have been a rush of Bromptonites but I have lost track. Who is going on to Paris?


Also does anyone know a good cafe we can adjourn to to watch what could be a crucial Tour stage...? Not that I expect it will be hard to find somewhere.
