A thing we all probably do when we get a flat, but hasn't been mentioned, is to look around for a safe and sheltered spot to do the repair. There's often a bus shelter, wall or big tree that will make the job less uncomfortable.

Even better if it happens near a pub.

Bloody 'ell! I'm surprised that didn't pierce the rim as well .
I once got a bent panel pin in my front tyre, which had gone right into the tube and was rattling around inside when I took the tube out! Sometimes the 'p' fairy just likes to take the p#ss.

I think I said something similar ! I was tempted to save it. Pic was from Feb 2019.

Or in the case of my commute, somewhere where you aren't going to be robbed - I've limped along the Fallowfield Loop until I got to an exit and a main road that was lit. Most recent puncture was in Moss Side - so I stopped near the bus stop where there were people.

I must admit, the possibility of that has never even crossed my mind with my commute.

I'm not sure there are any parts of Cardiff where I would be worried about being robbed while I stopped to fix a puncture. Certainly there aren't any on my commuting route.

There are places I wouldn't want to leave the bike, even locked up.

I think the worst that would happen round my way is ending up being surrounded by adenoidal ramblers in bobble hats telling you you're doing it wrong .

Mark it how? Is it OK if rainwater goes inside the tire and on the rim? It's inevitable when it's raining.

Some repair kits come with a piece of chalk for marking/dusting the repair.
Rain in the tyre etc is not a problem while you’re getting home. Once home you can take things apart and dry them.
