Found in the Yorkshire hills ...
Keep going; my route for the first 4 weeks last year was a simple 6-miler including one big hill.

Then it was 11 miles, then 19. On Saturday I did 60 plus I'm commuting 20+ miles each day.

It'll get easier and well done so far.

BTW I grew up in West Bridgford, but left in the late 80's to go to university and have never moved back.

Well done on your first outing which was a good distance too.
I haven't plucked up the courage to ware the lycra yet except for under normal shorts or tracky bottoms so well done on that too.
I keep reminding myself while I'm out that riding is all about the pleasure and not the speed but the times are naturally getting faster , the distance getting longer and I'm sure that the hills are smaller than they were a few months ago as I'm sure you'll be finding before too long.

Just seen this thread myself! Suffered all the same aches myself, saddle, thighs, calves, lungs.. All apart from the feet? But then I did a month or so before going clipless..

Must say I've got over them all now.. Though very envious of the distance of your first ride! 5 months in and I've still not done over 5 miles on road.. But then Derbyshire / Notts has an awful lot of hills!

everything round here seems to be up and down doesn't it. As a car driver you tend not to notice, but i have started to take note as i get ready for commuting by bike.

yes thats the attitude i took last night, take it easy and the speed will come......trouble is i tend to push hard and i am still a little nervous so the pleasure isn't quite there yet....bike=medievel torture implement:biggrin:
Get that lycra on!! Trust me if i can wear it looking like a Buddha with chicken legs anyone can......perhaps thats the real reason i'm cycling as fast as i can....so no-one sees me:giggle:

Pleasure? Who gave you the idea that riding a bike was supposed to give you pleasure?

As for the pain in the balls of your feet, make sure you have good quality well fitting wicking socks - synthetic, merino or bamboo all make good options.

I'm beginning to wonder:sweat:

Mmm i am wearing quite thin socks and i am getting plenty of airflow through the shoes, so my feet aren't sweating up at the minute, can i ask why wicking are neccessary? I think its more due to setup to be honest, but i will defer to the more experienced...???

It was just a thought, but ill fitting damp socks can bunch up under the soles causing problems. Might not be the case in your instance, you're better placed to evaluate.

i'm with you on that, its not happening at the minute but something for me to keep an eye on particularly if we get a summer this year, thanks.

Its my right foot more than anything so need to investigate/figure out whats going on, bearing in mind this foot stays clipped in for the duration which might have something to do with it, i'll have a fettle and drop into my LBS at the weekend as i didn't get time tonight. It might be that i could do with some insoles, we'll see as it was not so bad tonight, more ache than burn.

I get the same issue with my feet but it ends up going away it isnt a problem for me for lower mileage. Once I start hitting 50 plus it could be an issue but it could be to do with the position of the cleats on your shoes, there are plenty of vids on youtube showing how to adjust them.
