Well i finally managed to get a bike yesterday and so it was my first outing this morning.

What a lovely morning to have a first outing on, a little cool but very little traffic which is a good job.
Not been on a road bike for what must be at least 25 years, back then i knew them as racers and the tyres on my small racer were nothing like the ones i have on the new bike. In fact not been on a bike seriously for over 20 years and despite doing some regular work on a cross trainer for the last few weeks this was my first venture into a "fitness unknown"....i'm sure iv'e mentioned it before but i am totally unfit.

So new bike and first time (apart from the 1/3 mile from the LBS yesterday) clipped in....which was an experience.

i did 9.7 miles according to the Garmin, glad i turned around when i did as i was about shot by the time i got home. Out for an hour and i averaged 10.1 miles an hour:blush:. Mind you did gain 387 feet so all things considered ......i could have done a lot better! i think what did me was there is a steep hill about 1 1/2 into my ride which did me in straight away. And i did stop twice to adjust my saddle a little higher....and have a breather.

I felt such a fake being all lycra'd up and not going anywhere fast! I was trying not to grind and keep my cadence up....which was apparently 64rpm.

I have tried to keep on the go all day as once i sit down i dont think i'll get up again!
Got the dreaded sit bones ache and my legs are a little sore but at least i have not got backache which i expected from the new riding position ( all those years ago i used to ride flat bars).

So all in all at least i didn't have any clipped in moments....came close going up that hill though...so got to gain some confidence in climbing out of the saddle whilst clipped in.

One question though is it normal for the balls of your feet to hurt after that kind of distance in new road shoes? Suspect its because i'm not used to it and its new to me/ and or i might need to adjust the cleats a little??

Well done for getting out and doing it mate. First one is always the hardest.
Stretch out every hour or so to remove the lactic acid... get the missus to give your legs a rub too to get fresh blood in them to speed recovery
I have never had sore feet from my cycling shoes, but it could be due to your technique, foot shape, anything really, they should adjust to cycling, if not take a trip to you LBS and have them have a look at fitment of shoes and pedaling technique.

Good stuff^_^

The first time in my adult life I got on a bike I rode slightly less than a mile and had legs like jelly afterwards. I was, obviously, totally unfit, not to mention fat! I'm no fitness God now, but I cringe when I realise how unfit I'd let myself become.

10 miles in an hour sounds like an excellent start to me.

And if your main concern is that the balls of your feet are aching I'd say you've absolutely nothing to worry about!!

Nothing wrong with being kitted out and going slow.

But just to make sure... Here's my tips:

1) put two empty water bottles on the frame, and
2) don't go out until about 14:00.

That way people will think you've been riding all day and maybe done 80 miles already which is why you're going slow.

he he nice one.....

I don't sorry. Most of my riding at present is between Keyworth and Arnold - I 'commute' to my girlfriend's house several times a week. I'm currently unemployed, which allows plenty of time for bike riding (and internet surfing) I've spent most of today prepping for an interview tomorrow morning, but my (15 mile) ride at 8am this morning took me from Keyworth to The Embankment where I spent 10 minutes sat in glorious sunshine watching the rowers. 'Twas one of those 'good to be alive' mornings.

If that is your first proper ride in 20 years then you've done pretty well. Don't worry about the average speed - I'd say that was pretty respectable under the circumstances and you'll improve on it pretty quickly. Well done!:highfive:

Well done fella.
Good first ride out in great weather. You'll soon be up there at Olympic levels .
Not been on a road bike in 25 years and attempting Toton Hill is impressive. It's not the easiest climb to start with.
You'll soon get used to clipless. The burn is usually down to a bit of tweeking on the set up and you're sorted.
Out of interest what bike did you get and from which LBS?
Look forward to seeing you on the roads :bicycle:
