If possible start off going down a hill or flat so you can just take it easy until you warm up. Just stick at it and keep setting yourself goals/targets to achieve.

I dont have much choice usually I have to go down hill, then a bloody big one, well it's not as big as it was, still not a nice thing first thing.
This one http://app.strava.com/activities/41535910#697302667 on a Tuesday.
or this on a Friday http://app.strava.com/activities/40188639#662586972 not massive just not nice when you first start, though they arn't the problem they were. Just noticed I have the KOM on that last one, mind only 4 riders. I can do the first section one of two ways and I do vary it.

It's all about warming up. I headed out on Thursday and went straight into a local hill (a Strava Segment) and gave it full whack. Put the power down and was nearly sick at the top. Got home and I was nowhere near my PB.

dont set off too fast.

you havent warmed up, so youll never feel as good at the start but if you push it itll just depress you.

if you really want to go well from the start youll have to get on the turbo before you go out, like wiggo does

I wish I was Wiggo, then I could hang out with Miles Kane, Leighton Baines and Paul Weller and no one would say anything

I've always been the same, the first 5-10 miles of a ride are the ones where I suffer most aerobically, so I tend to use them as my warm up, slow and gentle. After that, 70-90miles is no probs, but if I rush the first 10 miles then I'm F8*ked after 50 miles. Listen to what your body is telling you.

In the summer here it gets very hot, especially from noon until about 4 pm. I try to avoid the sun during that time. I am going to find some more country lanes with a lot of shade for then.

My house is on a hill between two other larger hills, not really long but still a little work just to get out of my neighborhood and onto my routes. I am getting used to having to start out stronger on my rides. I don't like it but I don't see any way to avoid it. It is nice when I roll back in after a long ride. It normally takes me about 2 or 3 miles to get warmed up because of the harder starts.

Thats similar to my habitat.. I live on a mountain and its colder in the winter but hotter in the summer than the coast and our hottest time of the day is 5/6 o'clock in the evening in the summer..
We have three roads out of our village and all up hill as well..
