On another thread last week @screenman made a point about looking over your shoulder every once in a while to generally see what was happening behind you.

If I remember some people said it wasn't necessary, but this is a perfect example of why you should do it.

In this case it would have given the OP the chance of a, "WTF are you doing there?" type comment.

I refer the OP here:

Been there bought that t-shirt - and it's a tad annoying!

To shoulder checking.... absolutely - do it lots (years on a motorbike so it's ingrained)... but it's not always possible in time and on CS8 as I noted in my thread there are so many wheelsuckers it's a bit of a waste of time!

I got hit from behind last year by another cyclist! I was in a sportive and I'd stopped after going up a long hill (ok, it was a rise in the road) Anyway, I was in good view from behind as it was a straight road but he just went straight into the back of me taking me and 3 others down with him.... I guess he had his head down and arse up!! Luckily he only broke my bottle holder but I had a massive bruise on the back of my leg!!

There I am cycling along minding my own business when this prat overtakes me. He then sits in front of me then without warning slams on his brakes. Now he's moaning about damage to his bike. My fault obviously.

There are at least two sides to every story.

Didnt realise I had a couple of these 'vermin' up my arse a few weeks back....a fly or summit flew into my mouth so gobbed it (plus some other snotty stuff ) back out over my shoulder and.....you can guess the rest

Head to the LBC and cycling up main street, a bicycle took off with plenty of space and headed away from me, his mate took off later without looking and I had to brake like mad and stop dead or be in the back of him.

Told the guy in the LBS about it and he had seen them on his way to the shop (I was there first) and they had done the same to a car.

No can do - hydraulic discs on all my bikes (except the beater, but that's barely got any brakes!)

Just bunny hop potholes.

@deptfordmarmoset is talking about avoidance steering, where you steer the wheels to avoid an obstacle then steer them back and a little further to re-centralise your weight over the centre line of the bike.

I did similar last year, overtook 2 cyclists chatting, didn't think nowt of it, half a mile down the road I let go a snot rocket, half a mile later I let another one go. I then heard someone shout behind me that I nearly got him! Cheeky buggers must have chased me down for a free toe!

I did something similar at the end of one last year. Crossed the line and stopped about 10m further on to step off the bike...and executed a near perfect roundhouse kick on a bloke coming through behind me. We both ended up in a tangle no major harm done though.

Love it! Had something similar t'other day. Pootling along, car comes up too close, decide to have a good spit, find it works very well to discourage close driving. Problem! Soft top, with it down!!! So embarrassing.....
