Seen as how the cafe has come over all cineastic, I thought I'd chuck in my 10p worth.

Somehow yesterday I ended up thinking that Arsenic And Old Lace, Some Like It Hot, The Third Man and probably Laurence of Arabia should never, ever be remade on the grounds that you can't really improve on perfection.

What other films would you put in this category? (I would also add a German film called Herr Lehman but I suspect I may well be the only cc-er who has seen it.)

Also what films have been disastrously remade? The Italian Job for instance?

Well, I'll tell you film that should NEVER have been made in the first place.

The Hitchiker's Guide To The Galaxy.

I didn't see it at the cinema, so I bought the DVD, I watched it, once, and it has been sitting on the shelf gathering dust ever since.

Thing is having read the books, I'd be too embarrassed to sell it, and let people know that I actually had watched and owned such an attrocity. Maybe I should tie it to a firework and destroy the ruddy thing next Guy Fox night, or donate it to some land reclaim project on the coast of Norway or something.

Mr Adams, you were badly let down by that film, made after you died.

Dr Strangelove. Never EVER remake that!

the girl with the dragon tattoo trilogy… although i can see daniel craig making a good blomquist, the originals are excellent and the remake is presumably only to appeal to those that can't watch a film of foreign, unknown-to-them actors...

Even Bogart's Maltese Falcon? That was the third remake so i guess third time lucky.

I have a bunch of imaginary remakes and sequels., one of which is Seven Brides for Seven Brothers... remade as 7 Bridez 4 7 Bruvvaz - a hiphop musical based in modern day LA... It could work

Back to The Future should never be remade, nor should Teen Wolf, but for very different reasons.

Perfectly serviceable subtitled films remade in "American".

Perfectly serviceable subtitled films badly dubbed... Crouching Tiger springs to mind.

A friend of mine loves the French classic Amelie, but always adds, "It would be nice if they did and English language version though." NO IT WOULDN'T YOU...

The Italian Job / Get Carter I agree -

- no.

All good calls Andy - I would have added "The Ladykillers" - the Coen brothers version was OK - but why bother? It was never going to compete with the original.

Some of my favourites - Chinatown / Big Lebowski are too young to be remade right now, but someday, someone will - and they will be worse.

My only exception is if one is attempting to adapt a book. Then it's reasonable to have a few goes (Like the Maltese Falcon mentioned before or the Coens' "True Grit" which stuck to the book a lot more than the John Wayne and is better.)

Otherwise - nein danke, as you would say (probably)
