Groupon are at it again

Advertising e-scooters with no mention that they are not allowed on UK roads

I complained last time I saw it - took me ages to work out how to and before they would "understand" another week had gone by

then a little bit of tiny text appeared on the advert somewhere near the bottom

No wonder most people don;t even know they are not allowed to use them on the road

I also wrote to my MP last time - might do so again just to keep the subject alive

and yes - I am Mrs Trellis of North Wales!

Pointed out a similar missing warning on for sale signs in Currys in Leeds. Shop assistant thought it was a windup, as they(Currys) wouldn't sell something that couldn't be used.

Had fun this morning.

I refused to move aside for a trial scooter rider on the 'footway.'

He claimed it was a cycle lane so he could ride upon it.

I pointed to the round sign with a picture of two pedestrians and a bicycle and educated him, in that the sign denotes a "shared-path" and is a different legal and practical entity. Trial scooters are not lawfully allowed upon them.

Cycle lanes are designated by square or rectangular signs with a picture of a bicycle and/or the words "Cycle lane", and are for bicycles, trial scooters, etc, and are not designed to have pedestrians walking school children along them.

The finer points of the highway code and road traffic act seemed wasted upon him and he started to laugh and I just stared back, and he dropped into the road and carried on. Wish I'd had the presence of mind to get the 4 digit ID number and reported him.

:headshake:! If I use a shared path, I'll give a load of room to 'peds'' I'll even stop if necessary, let them pass, not so if on a cycle path, but then I'm not riding a road pace, it's just common sense.

I'm getting tired of this 'entitled' society, can't wait untill BMW put their badge on these Scooter things , ( hope they don't),then see 'accidents' sky rocket.

Just to say, society in general ,stop have a think, do you need to!
Then don't!

report it anyway - some of then have GPS trackers and they might be able to find out who it was
OK - they might bother trying
but at least you will have tried - and it is worth it for the time it takes to tell them online

and once you have found out how to do it it will be easy to find next time

you could become well known in the e-scooter offices - OK as "that pain in the neck bloke who keeps reporting scooters" but whatever
and, as a public official, it is almost your duty!!!

I am not up on the latest legalities of e-scooters. For example I just read what triall scooters mean. It means the e-scooters allowed to be used on roads only in certain trial areas only. It might be an old link but it said that since 2022 law was passed a few ciities and london boroughs were able to have trial schemes for e-scooters hence the trial scooter term. These are rental only, limited to 15.5mph and within the trial area only. Oh and no privately owned ones.

Now this could be an old link and things have changed. What is the current legal status of e-scooters? Is it still only the trial scooters run by the rental schemes in the trial areas only? So an e-scooter ridden in Lancaster is not likely to be legal still.

So if it is still the case are all the e-scooter users riding rental units in trial areas?

E-scooters involved in trials remain the only legal one's on UK roads. No announcement yet as regards the situation from next April, when electric vehicles become liable for VED.
However take a glance at what Ireland did earlier this year*, if you want an idea of what's heading this way.

Meanwhile, here in Glasgow a 54 year old man has died riding his e-scooter on the road to Paisley.
Collision with an HGV.
I have cycled on that road.

The other day I was walking Mini D to school when a car pulled up ahead of us and dropped off a kid.

Said sprog then walked to the nearest trial scooter and, no word of a lie, hopped on and rode the last 100 metres to school.

Promoting micromobility? No.

Enabling laziness? Absolutely.

You do have to wonder exactly what goes through the minds of some people

and the word "mind" is possibly pushing its meaning rather a lot
