So it's illegal to ride on a motorway then?......... I'll have to re-asses my LEJOG route then I was planning on using the M6

(I am...... by the way joking)

It's a bit more complicated than that...

Compared with some of the places it's completely legal to cycle that looks remarkably safe. The danger comes because drivers expect the hard shoulder to be completely clear.

I remember seeing a group of 3 cycle tourists on the A3 north of Guildford in rush hour, and a few years ago we drove north on the A1, passing at least 3 individual cyclists, including one carrying a very large rucksack.

Both roads are motorways without the designation and without the wide hard shoulder.

I saw someone the other week cycling on the hard shoulder of the M1 heading southbound between the services and the M69 junction, I thought maybe he works at the services and does the journey twice a day. Certainly a lot more direct (at least one of the ways) than if you went by car.

Quite... It is as dangerous to cycle in these places as it is to stop on the hard shoulder and stay in the car as Lorry Drivers get confused and think the stopped car is actually still moving.

All these motorways service stations have access roads behind them.

And? I regularly cycle on the A14.
I certainly would not.

Pedant mode I know but the Dartford Bridge is not Motorway. Between Junctions 31 and 2 it's the A282.
Crossing control operates an escort for cyclists. Some of their vehicles have bike racks to ferry people and their bikes across, not sure if you have to pay for this service

I believe I have cycled on a motorway.

20 years ago, I was cycling from Glasgow to the Lakes as part of a three peaks. It was just as they were finishing upgrading the A74 to the M74, and my map clearly did not have this upgrade. When I first encountered the works, it was a point where they'd built a complete new road, and after a while of pootling round I found the old A74 and followed that. Then it deposited me back onto a stretch where they'd upgraded the original A74 to motorway standard. They'd finished the physical work, but all the motorway signs still had tarpaulins tied over them, so I figured it wasn't yet legally a motorway, and as I had no way of finding if there was an alternative, I set out down it. After a few miles, it dawned on me that the signs no longer had tarpaulins, and as far as I could see, I was cycling along a full blown operating motorway.

I once cycled from Jct 1 of the M3 to Jct 2 zigzagging the three lanes and turned and cycled half way back again using all three lanes.

So it's only lorry drivers who get confused then? A car has never hit another car on the hard shoulder?

I regularly see lorries drifting into the hard shoulder (confusion, inattention, playing with the Sat Nav/Phone/X-Box etc) ....doesn't happen very ofen with cars though..

I have done the M23 spur from Gatwick. Only as far as the Balcombe road though. The signage could be better because the proper route is far from obvious. The road I should be actualy using
