Started young, and still going.

Barnet,
I've been put under a bit of pressure from MrsP and Miss junior P to do dry January. I probably do drink a bit too much ale, and red wine so I have agreed to give it a go. Because of the drugs and alcohol policy at work I tend to drink on the days I have off. So far so good. 6 days in and have not given in to the odd pang for a pint or two.

The person who wrote "smoothies and mocktails can be as enjoyable as alcohol" has obviously never had a diamond white/holsten pils snakebite in their life

When my mate comes down from Durham we always vow not to drink snakes, normally ends up 6 to 10 pints of half Golden Valley Cider and half Stella!.

Brandy Port is an aquired taste but very nice all the same..

I too thought this was about the weather at first:whistle:,(because it has rained a lot here, instead of snow) do you folks on here that drink find it impacts on your cycling ? I do,.... and consequently just to make riding easier and more enjoyable, since I started this new phase of riding three years ago I hardly drink at all................(this Christmas 3bottles of red wine....only.....)
I misread that the first time, especially with the comment about "only" 3 bottles of wine (really? I feel I had a boozy Christmas on half that!)

In short, it does have an effect on my cycling: I find it much easier after a pint or 1½ of beer, for a few hours until I crash (not literally... yet!). I'm not fast but not too slow then. I've not tried after wine beyond a short ride home or to accommodation after dinner when to be blunt I no longer care about time

Is "dry January" in support of any particular charity/ies? It was mentioned at the lunch stop today and no one seemed sure.
My mate did sober October in aid of some charity. I am doing it all for personal reasons.

My over-basic approach to this is, if I can go a month without alcohol then I'm in charge of it's relationship with me. I've done the past 15 Januarys without a hitch. Unlike some friends who have tried and failed "because they had a bad day" by about January 5.
OK, that's not good for those friends, drinking for dark reasons, but doesn't obsessing over it, whether it's either "I must have a drink now/today/whenever" or "I must not drink alcohol this month" mean you've lost perspective, it's dominating some of your decisions and that's basically a stage of alcoholism?

Yeah, same for mine, lest anyone think I drank that in a day or two!

I have on average 1-2 bottles of beer a week. No point stopping for a month on that amount.

Haven't had a drink since 5th July 2016 - not that I'm counting

Medical reasons for me - it's super easy to stop drinking after a serious illness when you're told your next drink might kill you as what's left of your internal organs aren't what they used to be  That said under normal circumstances I probably would have struggled with Dry January so fair play to those of you doing it :okay:

I did dry January in 2016, and found it quite easy, but I don't really see the point of someone like me doing it. Drinking is such an integral part of my life, doing something that is only ever going to be a temporary gimmicky type thing, and reduce my overall consumption by a mere fraction over the year, just so I can say I did it, seems pointless.

My whole social life revolves around pubs and alcohol and the only way I could abstain consistently would be to not have a social life. I worry that I drink too much, and I might try to only drink a couple of night a week instead of 4 or 5 to protect my health and finances a little, but dry January isn't going to help me achieve that.
