Got my new bike all most two weeks ago. Today the streets dried up for a spell so I decided to take it up the road for a wee test ride. I only got to the main road and turned back because the road was dirty. How sad!! I really hate the thought of gettin the drivetrain dirty!

My wife is going mad saying that it is the most expensive orniment in the house!!

Anyone else keeping their bike good until summer?

Cheers,

Col

i keep my good bike hung on the wall til summer/road racing season

but i have a winter bike 2, and a wet weather racing bike so i dont ruin my nice bike

I do clean my cheap Toys R Us Sabre Kinetic bike (which often gets people saying "Nice bike, mate" for some reason! Yet on my Peaugot, I got mocked!), I hate getting muddy on a bike (I can clean the bike later but I have to ride muddy until I get home, which isn't pleasant!). I did have one of those cycling suits that go over your clothes. I ordered a size large to allow it to be big enough to go over my clothes, as I can get into some medium clothes. It was big enough alright! Even though it said large in the ticket, I would say it was actually XXL! So I stopped using it as it was far too big. Need to get a new one (in the right size!).

Every day? That's a bit obsessive in my book, especially for a commuter...

Even commters need to be clean!! I hate the thought of a wet dirty bike sitting overnight. Parts for bikes are expensive nowadays and I like my bikes to run at their best always!. So a little time after use makes parts last longer esecially with the roads up here, covered in salt for half the year.

So back to my original post then! It is not a bad thing that I want to keep my new bike as clean as poss! After all it cost me enough and the components on it are costly to replace. So, dry days only!

Cheers,

Col

<snip pic of new usused looking bike>

I'd love to see a pic of your daily hack/commuter. The above bike must be a best/bling bike. My commuter gets washed once every 3-4 weeks - can't find time to do it more often than that - my weekends are busy and it's too dark to see what I'm doing in the evening at the mo.

+1, weekly at most for the commuter

My bikes get washed once every six months when I swap the one downstairs (the daily ride) for the one upstairs (the out of season one)...

Only needed 20 minutes of washing, after a dry ride on the road? Mine gets locked up, patted on the saddle if it's lucky, and left for next time.

I did an overhaul of my bike at the weekend, stripping it down completely and giving it a thorough wash. I'd been collecting better parts over the winter so took the opportunity to put them on as well plus new cables, and bar tape. Now I don't want to ride it for the same reason...it looks so new. I think I'll take some pics of it looking amazing in the sun tomorrow before my ride.

When I was cycling regularly, rain or shine, winter or summer, 16 miles every day, my commuter had a heavy overhaul maybe twice a year. The rest of the time it just got mucky. It doesn't do a bike any harm, although you don't have to be quite as slovenly as me.
