I've got that image I just posted above pinned to the wall of my office at work, just above where I keep my bicycle. People think I'm mad for cycling in; I think they're mad for taking the car with all the cost and stress that entails ... only to pick up their bicycle in the evening to keep fit.
It's too subtle for them. You should get one that says "Cars are for losers".

There are plenty of folk at work that think I ride a bike to be green. I put them right straight off. How many Lycra clad bike riders with another 3 bikes in the garage do it for being green. I have a garage full of kit, and a Car, yes a car, that sits on the drive ?

Had a really good discussion with a chap that retired last year that comes back to teach, he drives some nice Alfas and has had a Z4 ( was his daughters). He asked about how I've been, no more accidents, then I told him about my recent one. He actually thought I rode to be green, explaining it keeps me fit, is faster and more reliable than a car sort of sold it.

Money saving, yeh right, I've yet to meet a cyclist that commutes to save money.

Well, I do ride to be green. But that's not all. I also ride because:
- it costs practically nothing
- it keeps me fit (30kms each way burns around 1800 calories)
- it keeps me calm (no traffic jams, just the wind in my face)
- it's never late or goes on strike
- it doesn't put anyone's life in danger
- it doesn't make a sound
- it makes me feel great when I arrive for work rather than groggy and bad-temperered
- I love the look on my students' faces when I arrive in the morning with all my gear!

Always walked everywhere as a kid, to and from school in all weathers, don't mind.
But, if we use the car for work, journey home is 1 minute walk to car park, then 15-20 min drive home, if bussing it, going by last bus trip home, up to 1 hour or more, wait for bus followed by around 45 mins, seated if lucky, otherwise standing most of the way home, then a 10 min walk.
Last journey home by bus - left work 1635 - home 1820.
Last journey by car- left 1630 - home 1650.

Two and a half hours sat in traffic to go 17 miles ! The only thing that kept me amused was looking at all of the bikes .
I got about five miles from my house when I thought I could have been there by now on a bike . But I cant fit three sash windows and all my tools on a bike so needs must .

I'm lucky. Only 10 minute difference in journey times betwixt truck and bicycle, so there's no time penalty for the bike or time incentive to take the truck. In use the truck once a shift to lug in all my clothes and non-perishable lunch ingredients, and cycle the rest. Only smeggy heavy rain has me reaching for the trucks keys.

PS, some of you will hate me, but...

If I need a hop to the shops, I take a car, one of the two on the drive. Why, i don't have a shop bike. I don't think I could, it would be blinged up.

I'm currently medically banned from driving, heart condition.

I don't really miss it. I do miss the convenience though but the Wife does the driving so no real loss there.

What I do really miss is being able to get into the office and as such have been working from home during the ban. It is too far to cycle for me in my condition, it is a hilly 17 miles each way.

What it has done is made me use the bikes a lot more. It is surprising how much quicker and easier it is to get anywhere less than 5 miles on the bikes where before I'd routinely just jump in the car. Sadly most of us work miles away from home and cycling is not feasible.

Hats off and doffed though to the hardcore nutters that do long cycle commutes.

I got rid of my Landy, so now I'm car-less, I miss the Landy but I quite enjoy the fact I don't pay car insurance, tax, petrol, servicing etc

I really enjoy bobbing to the shops on my bike. Local supermarkets are an easy 1 mile away by bike. Cycle there, leave bike outside (with or without trailer depending on what I'm getting), bob in the shop, bob out, cycle back. Job done.

Same journey in the car, feck about parking. Try to find a space. Try to get out of the car park. Wait at lights. Gah, no thanks.
