I packed up 18 years ago because I wanted to see my daughter grow up, she is now 20 but I have no intention of going back on them. I don't mean to scare people off smoking but last monday I buried my brother, he died one day after his 61st birthday, he lived in a big house, had a big car and a wonderful life but cigarettes took that from him, he was diagnosed with lung cancer last Sept, he enjoyed his fags but in the end they took everything from him and took him from his wife and family.

Do you feel fitter / healthier?

i know i do.

Due to a knee operation I am currently not exercising so cannot really tell how much fitter that I feel. But I do feel a bit better in myself, and it is nice to not have the car smelling like an ashtray.

Well done by the way you are doing very well.

One thing I have noticed since packing in the fags about four years ago, is I suffer very few colds or sore throats. I think that an element is also due to being fitter from cycling a lot, but not smoking has allowed me to get to a much fitter level by cycling a lot.

Keep up the good work everyone.

Oh thats the smoking that worsens colds...definately.
Ive been cycle commuting etc for 15 years. I only smoked (lightly) for the last three years, yet since that time, ive always had worse colds, ones that hang on for longer and more chesty...than i ever used to when i didnt smoke.

I was a fairly heavy smoker (30 roll ups a day) then I decided to join a dating site on the internet. I received very few replies to my approaches to the ladies. When I looked closer most ladies on that, and other, sites listed non smoker as a requirement in a future partner. About the same time my doctor's surgery started an NHS Quit group so I joined. The best decision I ever made. After a one to one with the counsellor I was recommended to use Champix which my GP prescribed for me. The idea of Champix is to set a quit date about 7 - 10 days ahead, start the tablets then quit on schedule. I started the tablets and didn't make the quit day. About 4 days and I just didn't want to smoke so I didn't. Just like that. No cravings, no side effects, I went to bed a smoker and woke a non smoker. For me it was a miracle. I had tried to quit so many times but failed. Now I have been quit 4 years and a month and don't even miss them. I also met a fantastic lady through the internet and got married again two and a half year ago.
