I used it for the first time last night. It didn't start collecting water till about 2 hours after being plugged in but after 6 hours it'd soaked up enough water to fill one of those plastic measuring jugs that hold 1 litre/1.75 pints.

It's still on 76, which I think means percent humidity, as I did loads of laundry clothes washing yesterday, but it seems to be soaking up the water quite well.

From previous experience dehumidifying a house, humidity stays high-ish then suddenly drops down

Yes, it tends to be on an ever decreasing scale i.e. the drier and warmer it gets, the quicker it collects in the tray. So will start off slow and get quicker. You'll get to know how long it takes to dry a load of washing and then how long you want to keep it on afterwards if you want to further dry out the room. As the clothes are drying, some of the moisture will collect in the tray but of course some will still be circulating in the air and landing on the windows and walls

If the property has had very high humidity over a long period, the walls, ceilings etc can hold alot of moisture. Once these substrates have dried out the air humidity will reduce at a faster rate (the same when your drying washing). When we first used ours, we ran it 8-10 hours a day for a few days to bring the overall humidity down to an acceptable level.

My humidifier is now showing 53 percent humidity. So far It's soaked up 5.50 liters of water. Serious question. Do humidifiers just absorb water in the air, as in humidity, or do they also take in standing water, like toilet water for example? I ask because I'm probably imagining it, but I looked the other day and the water level in my bog seemed to be lower than the usual, after I hadn't flushed it for a while. I now keep the bog lid down and my bathroom door closed as my humidifier is only about 8 foot away from my toilet. 🤔

They most certainly do. Btw always turn it off before you go to bed as they can seriously dehydrate you in the night ;)

I've been leaving it running throughout the night. It showed 53 percent humidity just before I turned it off when I went out this afternoon. I put it back on half an hour ago and it showed 63 percent humidity. As always I left my windows open while I was out. My thoughts are that leaving my windows open lets in damp air. Maybe I shouldn't open my windows in autumn/winter. 🤔

No idea but I like a window open when it isn't raining or feeling damp outside. I'm thinking about buying one myself, noticed lidl have a mini
dehumidifier for about £50 to put in a fitted robe on a north facing wall

Stick it on auto mode and set humidity about 50%. We use one in the kitchen to dry clothes, but it's on constant. The one in the garage has been on quite low, around 40% to ensure camping kit is dried out, but it's been filling a full bin every day like the kitchen unit.

They make a massive difference to even small amounts of damp or condensation, and also lower heating bills. Leave one near a kitchen or bathroom.

I notice that when I've got out the bathroom after a shower the humidity percent goes up to about 64 from about 53 percent. My windows used to steam up, but now they stay clear. I've just emptied another liter of water from the water container.

One thing to be careful of in old properties is that a moisture content is normal in the walls and undue drying out can cause issues with mortar and pointing falling out.

How do you class 'undue' ? Low humidity in the uk is a rare thing so a highish 50% will be home positive.
