sad news.

The roads around Rossendale are actually improving, so seem to bucking the trend. The worst bit was between Rawtenstall and New Line junction. On a bike with 16" wheels it was a bit teeth rattling.

In response to Accy..if the roads are bad and unknown, should we not be riding at a pace with which the conditions allow? We expect car drivers to do it, so why not us?

You don't expect what appears to be a large puddle (just one of literally hundreds) across the road to be a bloody great pothole though. And given the flooded roads here and elsewhere, the only option would be to drive/cycle at about 1 mph... which obviously isn't a sensible proposition

Twice over the years I have hit potholes hard enough to rotate the bars downwards, but never yet come off. I try to ride far enough out so that there's likely to be space either side of a hole in front of me. Dark, wet weather and the glare from traffic don't help with seeing them in time, though.

Reading between the lines, it seems that that the car driver may not have been totally at fault and that the cyclist hit the pothole because their view was blocked by the rider in front.

There is zero evidence that a pot hole was involved. If you read the article someone from her club says a friend saw them filling in pot holes on that road. That's it. That's all the evidence that there is.

Crappy paper makes stuff up to exonerate a driver involved in a fatality.

In fact if you read the article carefully three people who weren't there and didn't see what happened exonerate the driver. What an amazing coincidence.

that possibility occurred to me too - not enough to go on to infer whether the poor woman fell off and was run over, or was simply hit whilst doing the proverbial suicide death swerve (or merely riding along for that matter)

Is is a coincidence though? These sort of articles are pretty regular so obvious explanation is rubbish hacks, scary explanation is there's something behind it.
