I did suspect something like this when I posted, but it is still sad to have it confirmed. He was a helpful bloke and a frequent poster, especially, and ironically, notifying us of the latest stars to die.

He had a good sense of humour, was happy to join in the pith taking and could take it when aimed at him.

I'm genuinely stunned. I'd never met him but he'd become part of my daily life for 13 odd years.

John died on 2nd August at the age of 74, and his funeral took place on 21st August

Well, dang.

Most of the time when someone drops offline we never find out what happened.

Thanks all. // I'd assumed Cycleops/John was perhaps withdrawing from the forum and some social contact - hence his non-reply in October to my WhatsApp message and then an email. But understand he died suddenly on 2nd August - which was the last day he posted on Cyclechat. // John was my main reason for joining CycleChat, and I've been hooked since with this community of warm, knowledgeable people. A member on another forum referred to him and this forum when I was looking for advice on my trip to Ghana. He was a real, mellow gent in person as well as online. He loved Ghana and the life he had there with his family. I've asked his brother-in-law to pass on my condolences to his wife and son.

I was on a WWII mailing list in the 1990s. One of the regulars seemed to be there 24/7. Besides a historical interest, he had actually been there, a radio operator in a US bomber squadron based in England.

He went radio-silent for a few days, and his daughter logged in on his account and let us know he had passed away. Hal had been in a nursing home since the 1980s, with a dial-up modem connecting him to the outside world.
