I was in two minds about posting John's name (and perhaps I shouldn't have), knowing a Google search would show the circumstances in which he died. Festering on this a little today (aided by winter blues and grey skies), I feel more deflated than yesterday when I found out about his death. But I'll look to the positive and remember him as a real, mellow, knowledgeable gent who I was privileged to meet.

The circumstances in which he died bear no relevance to his worth as a person or the regard he earned on this forum. None of us get to choose our death, be it sitting on the toilet like Elvis or out on the bike like Beryl Burton. His passing was in a far better way than some poor bugger spending his final weeks in hospital in constant pain, covered in his own excrement and vomit and wishing the end would come quickly.

If I had to pick a way to expire his would be near the top of the list.

I reckon I'd be quite impressed by what actually is top of your list then.

Hi All, I have also tried to get in touch with Cycleops (John Hughes) in the last few months, but today sadly found out that John died on 2nd August at the age of 74, and his funeral took place on 21st August (see order of service and funeral service on Youtube). // I met John and his family in January-February when I went to Ghana for nearly 4 weeks, mostly on a cycling trip and partly to deal with a family matter. I bought a bike from him (see photo), and he and his wife, Sophia, gave me good advice, help, and hospitality in their home at the start, during, and at the end of my trip. // Local kids brought their (usually neglected and jalopy-like) bikes to him to fix, and he was well-known in the area as "the bike-man" for doing this (which increased demand!), and for cycling, usually on his gravel bike (one of many). I may need to return to Ghana next year, and was hoping to meet up with John again if this was the case. But that won't happen now. Sorry to be the bearer of sad news.

Heck, I've just read this!😥 This is indeed very sad news!! May John rest in eternal peace!✝️ Such a fine gentleman indeed!!😥

It'll be 20 years when Chris Rea has finished with it.
