We've only gone and given ourselves a chance here...

Night watchman scores 9 from the final over. Mad stuff, just mad - has nobody read books on how cricket is played?

I love the fact that we are even considering it as an option.
We have 2 full days to bat and the pitch isn’t that old. But it can’t happen again can it?

There's more than enough time to knock off the runs, but with the current approach it's either going to be defeat or glory. Not that I entirely mind that, because it is exciting, if a little weird that there's hope going into a second innings like this.

Getting to within touching distance of 100 is a pretty decent achievement. Shame to lose but we made a real game of it.

One huge positive is that we seem to be getting somewhere with our openers. Hopefully we've seen the back of Root coming in at 16/2 and having to do it all.

The umpires had to give it out once the appeal was made. The Zimbabwe captain should have withdrawn the appeal, definitely not in the spirit of the game. Happy outcome as they got battered in the end.

Disagree* with your 1st sentence. Hard agree with the last one!

(*my amateur justification being that the relevant laws are full of "in the Umpire's view" clauses, so they clearly have the power to use discretion.)
andanotherthing ... why did they refer to the TMO? Does he/she get to interpret legal grey areas? Or more likely, they wanted someone to quickly check the rulebook before embarrassing themselves in public 🤦‍♂️

I would think that the on field umpires didn't want to give it out, perhaps went to the tmo to see if he'd confirm the 'ball was dead'. As they didn't confirm it was a dead ball, they had no option but to give the dismissal. In other 'not in the spirit of the game' appeals umpires often ask the captain if they' d like to withdraw a contravertial appeal, not sure if this happened in this match?

Dont think so - noone has mentioned it in the lively-but-informed discussion I have seen so far :P

Leach has gone home. I think India will miss Kohli than we will miss him, but it's still a big blow and puts a huge amount of pressure on the young fellas.

Leach is very unlucky picking up this knee injury after missing last year's Ashes with a back problem. The young spinners backed up by Root have done well so far & the remaining tests are great opportunity to advance their craft against a very good test team.
