Well an amicable resolution has been met and I'm now awaiting an RT-57 frame to come back into stock to be sent out to me. Just rang up an LBS however and they want £150 for them to put all the parts onto the new frame?! Is this a bit expensive? I can do near enough all the work myself but was willing to spend a bit of cash to get a professional to do it. What problems may I encounter when swapped the gear over?
If it was me, I'd get the LBS to trim the steerer and fit the headset (assuming new forks are being supplied) and do all the rest of the work myself. None of it is difficult, and the most fiddly bit - fitting the brifters to the bars and getting cables fitted should not need to be done as the bars don't need to be stripped down.

When I had some trouble with a frame. The company wanted me to strip the parts before sending it back, I said no so the cheeky basts said I should get my LBS to do it. I stuck to my guns and said no. In the end they picked up the complete bike. Changed the frame, swapped the parts over and shipped back. All on their account.

I guess you bought the whole bike from them. I wouldn't expect them to change the bits if I only bought the frame.

I'd definitely get Planet X to do the swapping, you never know if a fault might develop in the future and you don't want Planet X saying you didn't assemble the bike correctly......

they aren't budging on fitting the stuff to the frame as it "isn't a warranty issue" ?!?! I'm getting pretty miffed with them now...

I think that's fair enough from them.

OK, you will have to change over all the components yourself but it's all easy to do, it will give you good practice at the mechanics of a bike and it's far easier then you think. However, ask them to at least change the headset for you.

In my opinion they should cover the refitting as well as supplying a new frame. On a carbon frame you'll need a torque wrench etc to and other tools to the fit the parts correctly. It's not a job you should be expected to do when you bought a full bike from them.
Go to trading standards.

The RT57 frame is a lot newer than the Pro Carbon so i think youve done well out of them there.
As Ian says its fun/good experience getting hands on so just take it easy and enjoy or get the LBS to do it, pay the fee and be smug with your better frame.

yeah i'm pretty comfortable with everything bar the headset so might get the LBS to do that part, how much can I be expected to pay?

I was wondering, as it's a frame & fork set, wouldn't it come with a headset fitted? Or have they already said it won't? If its an integrated headset then fitting the crown race is the only specialised bit, rest of it just slots in, afraid I don't know about other headset types.

Just checked the spec on the website and it does say it come with headset, wonder why they said I would need this part? Yet another email to send...

I'd send the bike back to Planet X and tell them you're rejecting it as unfit for purpose, which you are legally entitled to do after such a brief period of ownership before a terminal fault showed up, and you either want a replacement or your money back. What they are suggesting is simply not on and Trading Standards would come down on them like a ton of bricks.

The rt 57 is a nice upgrade IMO. Seems like you should take the fitting of parts as a nice project on building a bike up.

He didn't but the bike as a project to build up, he bought it to ride. And mechanical skills are best learnt a bit at a time as parts need replacing or upgrading, not stripping and rebuilding a brand new machine to cover someone elses mistake. With all the pitfalls that involves for someone who can't do it easily and without advice that's asking for trouble.

This is stand your ground and let PX sort it time.

@Smokin Joe I agree and maybe they should just send him a new rt 57 built but have a feeling that they won't. Planet x are a become a victim of their own success and currently have a 21 day backlog on builds. If they are also waiting for frames he may be without a bike for months should they agree to build a complete bike.
