And people used to think the world was flat!

No, numbnuts is right; steel IS real. I have a steel framed bike so I know it exists! My alu framed one looks real too though. If they were only figments of my imagination then I'd have a carbon fibre one AND a titanium one just for good measure!

I trust Planet X come through on this. I suspect they will.

When they do all the demonstration tests on carbon tubing on YouTube, it takes incredible force to damage it yet there are a number of examples of cracks and failures on CC. Is nuttall's experience a rarity among carbon bike users?

Looks like damage to me. If when I had received the bike I would have noticed it within about 3 seconds and sent it back without it riding so much as 1 foot let alone 1 or even 60 miles. So if it happened after you inspected and accepted it, then question is how? It could still be damage though or an integral fault with the frame. I guess when you return it as it will have to go back for inspection, they will decide. Good luck.

It has to be a manufacturing or transport fault. Look at this video of the strength superiority of carbon over aluminium when stressed in the right direction:

Errr ……. I am guessing the fault wasn't there when the OP took delivery, unpackaged, inspected and assembled their bike and first rode it? I am guessing it has happened subsequently for what ever reason - weakness in the tube or damage? Cannot say at this stage.

Yeah, wouldn't have ridden it if i had noticed anything. I've done some research and found an article of a person who had found a crack in the seat stay upon delivery and I've spoken to a mechanic who is familiar with the situation... maybe a common fault for these frames, oh dear...

They sell bucket loads of frames, so you are bound to get the odd fault. Looks like storage or transport damage. Maybe it didn't show up on delivery, but riding has caused it to crack worse.

Well an amicable resolution has been met and I'm now awaiting an RT-57 frame to come back into stock to be sent out to me. Just rang up an LBS however and they want £150 for them to put all the parts onto the new frame?! Is this a bit expensive? I can do near enough all the work myself but was willing to spend a bit of cash to get a professional to do it. What problems may I encounter when swapped the gear over?

When I had some trouble with a frame. The company wanted me to strip the parts before sending it back, I said no so the cheeky basts said I should get my LBS to do it. I stuck to my guns and said no. In the end they picked up the complete bike. Changed the frame, swapped the parts over and shipped back. All on their account.
