Just the thought of riding up the trough makes me want to be sick. I might give this a go and turn for home at Glasson Dock. Strava tells me I haven't turned a wheel since 27th of July, so I suppose I'd better get back on it at some point.

I happened to run into ColinJ and friend out on a 'training ride' for this ride at Spring wood carpark today. I was out on a bit of a consolation ride as family commitements mean I'll be in London on the 29th. I was rolling up to the lights to turn left to Whalley, and thought, that bloke crossing to the car park's got a backpack just like Colin. And a blue bike like his...good grief it is Colin, so I pulled in for a quick chat.
I didn't do the whole Trough-Glasson Dock, but turned left before Whitwell and went up Longridge Fell on Forty Acre Lane, wow slpendid 360' views from the top. Lovely descent down through Longridge then home to Todmorden via Ribchester, Accrington and Bacup.

Ha ha - I thought "That cyclist coming towards us looks just like Svendo"!

I'm just going to check my phone to see if any of the photos turned out ok, then I will do a ride report in "Your Ride Today".
I'm going to cycle up to Whalley from Prestwich so will just do the official 103km loop. Is it OK if one or two cycle mates come with me as well?
Why not!

I do think we will need to split into (say) 3 smaller groups to give motorists a chance to overtake safely, and to accommodate different speeds without some riders having to hang about too much, or others feeling pressured to speed up. Perhaps overall speeds of 9-ish mph for the slow group (speed of slowest in that group), 11-ish mph for the middle group (riders could go ahead to the faster group, or drop back to the slower if they wanted to), and (say) 13+ mph if faster riders want to press on? Or we could just see what develops naturally on the day.

I will probably start with the slow group, and perhaps speed up later if I feel up to it.

Here is a solution to keep the group together - on its way to being 20 bikes in total and will be used a week later to pull a Grand Piano on a trailer up Cragg Vale! Only in Hebden Bridge ^_^ The Grand Departs

I am so wanting to say yes to this, I know the distance itself will be OK for me... but what's worrying is the Bowland climb and the figures of 18%-22% that I see on some parts of it have me thinking that I just won't make it. How bad is that climb or am I worrying too much?

You're worrying too much.

hi Mike
Don't know who said it was 22% up there, it isn't. Steep bit on the Trough is about 1 in 6 and it is only that steep for a short stretch. See Colin's post #293 upthread. Come join us!

Hi Mike.

Yes - the really steep bit on the Trough is about 18% but not for too long. The only other really steep climb I can remember is a short nasty one after we drop down to cross the Ribble at Ribchester on the way back. Again, that is only for a couple of hundred metres. If the worst comes to the worst, you are talking about 10 minutes of walking with your bike in a ride lasting 6 hours or so.

Come on down. And then then come on UP!
