Decided to have a closer look at the route up to the high point at the trough and it is indeed as I remember it last year, except we did it the other way around. A note of caution to anyone who is thinking of riding this single speed, fixed or freewheel, it is not easy, in fact I would class it as damned hard. The problem [no offence Colin], is that folks that don't actually ride fixed think that we can climb anything, when of course there is a limit, so while the geared folk are spinning along in their 30 inch gear, the single speed nutters are trying to get up a climb that has an arrow on it in a gear maybe two and a half times the size of theirs.
Once over the top of the trough there is some serious descending to do, steeper in fact than what we will have just come up, and fixed does not stop as easily as gears. By the time the fixed riders get to the bottom they will be well and truly knackered.
BTW, this is not a complaint, just pointing out the difficulties of attempting this on fixed. We will be up in the area this weekend, well Cheshire actually but on the Saturday we have arranged to have a recce with Kiwi Sal, probably going roughly via Longridge and Chipping up to the Trough to see if it is in fact feasible. If anyone else is around who wants to say hello please do so, and if there is anybody who has got up the Trough on fixed without walking I would like to hear of their experience.
